diesel Bongo starter motors

Post by progroup » Wed Jul 27, 2011 4:09 am

Anyone know the best NEW price; where to get them?
Mine is a Denso 228000 4830 model.

I have disassembled my existing starter, cleaned and polished the commentator, but can do nothing about worn bearings on the bendix gear. Solinoid contacts are worn out as well. Intermittent 'clicking', most typical problem!

If available, I would prefer new, or if I am out-to-lunch on that request, a rebuilt or good used spare with some overhaul kit(s).

Cheers,
Dave

If it's the starter for the cold climate twin battery set up, the contacts kit won't work, comes up regularly. Not heard of anyone replacing the bearings as yet (or needing to).
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Thanks 'Wonkanoby'; I spoke with Carl @ RepairkitUK this morning and ordered his Plunger & Contacts kit for the solinoid.
Thanks also for the link to a 'new' starter should I really need one!
when I used to twist wrenches for a living; these Nippon Denso starters were on many vehicles here in NA. I have even fab'd my own versions of the contacts out of crude copper to make them work again. I have one Dodge Caravan starter left with the identical solenoid switch. I could probably use it, but for a mere 11BPD I'll wait for the kit.

The bendix throw out bearings #6004RHK1 were worm in my opinion, but still functions okay. The commetator & brushes have lots of life left [visually untested!]. The solenoid is the culprit for sure though! :)

Including Missfixit; all the advice is sound regarding these starters; where the kit resolves 99% of the 'clicking' issue. I just needed to bounce this off you folks for confirmation. what I must say is how frigging easy the re&re is!!! 8)
Just under 5 minutes to remove including disconnecting the battery. I have changed all kinds of starters over the years, but this one tops all on record!!!

Cheers

As you say, easy job, when I did mine, it only took about half an hour from lifting the seat to starting the bongo again once it was done 8) , although one or two peeps have had a problem with stiff nuts.

What's that got to do with starter motors Kirsty? :)

Hello all,
My starter motor has started doing the same as progroup's. Mine has the same part number, 228000 4830.

Just wanted to double check before I order anything, did you say that the contact repair kit sold on eby fits this motor ok?

Thanks very much
IanD

These Denso starters are readily available as are all the parts. PM me for any details.
