Rattle from my Bongo
Hi. There is a rattle from underneath/rear of my 96 FWD bongo. Had it in to my trusted mechanic twice and he thinks it may be the front drive shaft. I thought it was from the rear wheels/brakes but hard to tell when driving. Had it up on lift with wheels driving to check. Any comments or advice welcome.
Thanks, Bill

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
Could be anything, when does it happen? what sort of noise?
Top suspects would be droplinks, anti roll bar bushes/brackets, spare tyre loose, exhaust/internal baffles, rear door stop fallen off/need firkling, loose jack etc in tool store under side step, the list goes on

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
Worth having a search using words like 'rattle', as mysterious ones like this have come up before, and may have been solved.

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
As I said. A not too loud rattle. Checked all the obvious things, loose tools etc. The guy who looks after my van ( for the six years I,ve had it) is going to take the shaft off and have it refurbished. Just thought I,d run it past the Forum.
Bill.
ps Have searched the Archives but not found anything quite the same.

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
But when does it happen? all the time? over bumps? round corners? after braking?
All a bit vague for a forum diagnosis/guess
. Mebe a recording of the noise may help?

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
The rattle is there most, not all of the time. A tinkling kind of noise. Not worse on turning or over bumps and applying brakes/handbrake does not affect it. I know it all sounds vague but there it is. Thanks for your interest and comments.

Is it there when engine is runnning but stationary? Or just in motion? Have you checked it's not either of the ac/heater fans?

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
Is the exhaust fitted properly or is it running very close to the rear axel where it passes over ? is the heat sheild at the rear attached properly? is the spare wheel tight ?
Remember that when up on a ramp the van won't have the weight of the driver in it which if something is very slightly rubbing could make all the differance.
Before your mechanic gets anything refirbed i'd want to be 100% sure that it was defo gonna solve the issue

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
if its the rattle im thinking of it will be the splines on the front prop, the front shaft as it exits the transfer box, this has a tin section round the splines/coupling and it vibrates and amplifies the noise, usually when the motor is on/off throttle, loaded and unloaded quickly.
grab the prop while in park and twist, you will hear it tapping, slack splines.
this is usually the result when the tyres wheels are not correct for the 4wdrive system.

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
I had this on mine after checking the usual it turned out to be the steel rad pipes that run from front to engine bay, they have a rubber with a bolt through the middle the rubber had worn creating a metal on metal vibration try getting under and holding these pipes you never know.

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
Is it a definite rattle? Not a weird creak? I had this quite recently after the bongo had been jacked up from the rear on the correct jack points, but using a trolley jack with too small a jack point plate...The plate had squised the lip on each mount which meant the lips were just touching the anti roll bar on certain corners... The creak could not be duplicated with the bongo stationary or when lifted...

Thanks Bill - it will be interesting to learn what the cause turned out to be. Good luck getting it sorted.xjr1300 wrote:Thanks for all the input. will post again as soon as it,s sorted.

Re: Rattle from my Bongo
Hi again. Update. Have had the front prop shaft removed to be refurbed. Any advice on running the Bongo on 2WD ? Seems ok on the small distance I,ve driven it home. All advice welcome and will report back on the rattle I had and hope to have cured. Thanks, Bill
