The rear system is accessed behind the side panel behind the drivers seat, but it's no easy task to get into the casing around the gubbins even once the panel's off, may be better trying some of the ac cleaner type spray on the rear one.
So where are the fans for the rear heaters? Can't work it out. If I knew where the air was coming from then I might be able sort it.

Already told you  behind the side panel behind the drivers seat, look on that FAQ link, all the schematics are there.
This thread may help, pics on page 4 of me removing rear system - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 0&start=45
Bear in mind access is very limited in the well it sits in, the clips that hold the 2 halves of the casing are all but impossible to find/replace if you take them off in situ, they ping off nicely #-o . To take out the whole unit you have to disconnect the ac pipework & lose all the gas as well as the coolant pipes, not a 5 minute job. The fan can be removed relatively easily once the panel is off though, there is a bolt under the sill outside.

All true. But I found that despite having the smell in the rear, it vanished when I sorted out the front fan. All other reports I've read in the past seemed to track back to the front heater matrix, hence my advice toinvestigate/fix that first (becuase it is almost certainly involved, even if not exclusively) and see if the problem is sorted before going on to the rear one.

Kirsty - are the front and rear airways not connected at all? I can quite believe it, as the rear seems to have its own intake and outlet and floor level. But I seem to recall smelling the Dettol disinfectant coming out of the rear head-height vents when I squirted it through the front heater intake. But maybe that was a false trail and it was just recirculating air that had picked up the smell of it?

There is no connection at all between the front & rear heater airways on ANY bongo, there just isn't anywhere for it to run/connect, they are two completely seperate systems, as you say, must have been picking up & recircing the smell as the rear only has internal inlets.
