waxoil! are you sure?

i have rustproofed several cars in the past to varying degrees of success and if you are going to do the task Waxoil is one of the best. Usual underseal after time and changes in heat tends to leave small cracks in the underseal whre moisture can get in and even worse stay. Waxoil is a more pliant substance and does not seem to suffer from this. The cheapest rustproofer is old engine oil from a garage filtered then painted on, the garage will love you for taking the old oil away but will never work on your underside again! but if you have the time you could re do this as part of a regular winter preparation. my own personal choice is to buy a tin of Galavfroid paint -not cheap as a 5 litre tin costs about 50 pounds. I guess the bongo underside will use about 2 litres to cover. It is a cold paintbrush applied galvanisation and once on. rust will not take hold. a word of warning though keep it away from copper pipes as it promotes rust on copper pipes by electrolytic action. its good stuff, its what pylons are painted with. whatever you do don't leave the metalwork bare, hammerite or any metal paint will add a level of protection.

So if waxoyl eventually washes/ wears off, how often do I need to reapply it?

It's that old question about string and the length of it really- what mileage you do what climate/conditions you drive in eg deep water splashes etc. But really I would guess every year get underneath and have a good look. bear in mind that you won't have to totally reapply just touching in will suffice. its the inspection thats the key. once a year with my old landrover was enough- I used the cheaper option of old engine oil(free!) and then left the Landie parked on an old carpet for a few days_its still going strong( the landrover, not the carpet.
