Screeching noise on startup

Post by eoptio » Sun Sep 04, 2011 8:01 pm

Hi all

recently started to get a screeching noise on startup on idle. As soon as the engine is warmed up it goes. First thought it is the belts (they were replaced recently), would they be too loose? How do I tigthen them? Any other suggestions as to what it could be?

Thanks

Could be an exhaust manifold stud gone, look for sooty marks.
To check the belts, find the longest run on the belts & you should be able to twist it by @ 90 degrees or 10-15 mm deflection if you push it with a finger. Be careful not to overtighten as it'll knacker bearings. Tightening is done on the alternator, need to slacken the mounting bolts top & bottom then tighten the adjuster jobby then tighten the mounting bolts again. may be worth a quick whip over the pulleys with some emery cloth to deglaze them to.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Mine was the same but was fixed by Adrian in Bury. It was the bearing in the idler pulley on the aircon belt. Do a search -someone very recently on the forum gave the bearing number if that helps.
