Roof Rails

Post by MrSniff » Sat Sep 03, 2011 9:04 am

Hello, hope this is the right forum for this question.

I bought a set of the roof rails from the online shop and noticed that the foot has a lip which is clearly meant to fit the roof profile. Unfortunately out AFT doesn't have the same profile (checking the photos of the side rails in situ shows a valley on the roof which ours definitely doesn't have).

Has anyone else fitted these rails to a flat roof top - I guess I could grind the lip off, but it seems a bit drastic!

Any help appreciated...

Hi, IS your AFT roof original equipment? Or one of these increasingly popular aftermarket or spurious "freetops"?

As far as I know it's original; that's how it was imported - it's a later Bongo (2001) if that makes a difference?

Aero? tinted window type jobby at the front of the AFT, with a little "kick" at the back edge & no spoiler on the top of the door?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Yup - Aero
MrSniff wrote:Hello,

Having owned our Bongo for 18 months or so now we are looking at adding a few extra bits...

I am hoping to fit a towbar to our Bongo (mostly for use with a towbar mounted backbox) and have done a fair amount of looking at different ones. Our bongo is a 2001 SG5W Aero, but all the kits seem to state either models SGL3,SGL5,SGL11 & SGLW or a generic "Bongo 1995 on". Can anyone tell me whether these kits will fit ok (most likely the kit offered on the website here: can anyone give me their view?) - I guess I'm also gonna have to cut the Aero bumper for any of the kits (eek)..?

Thanks for any help!

Ian
May be worth letting Ian know that the roofbars don't fit an Aero AFT as supplied due to the lack of a "gulley". Looks like both types in the shop have a similar design re the lip

you could make a spacer of some sort the same depth as the lip (will need slightly longer bolts though), or grind the lip off.

Might be easier to follow the spacer route , i think [ unless you're a wizz with the grinder ] it will be much neater and as the bars are powder coated it will be a b ***** to touch up. It also means you can still sell them on seperately in the future if you choose.
