Cruise control fitting - urgent help please!

Post by Sharkojoints » Thu Aug 18, 2011 8:38 am

Bought a Waeco MS-50 cruise control for our '95 diesel auto Bongo.

Bongo is now at ADS Automotive in Bristol for fitting.

ADS have never fitted cruise before and seem to think it will take 4 - 5 hours! Are there any instructions I can give to them to help with this job? I get the impression from here that this isn't a long job.

Seem to remember someone on here had written up some instructions, so all help gratefully appreciated! I'd fit it myself, but the insurance ain't keen.. ;)

I had a auto electrician fit mine a few months back and it took him just shy of 3 hours. He used the instructions that came with the unit

I was also given a certificate to certify it's fitment by a competant installer for insurance purposes  :D

This link might help

Hi Sharkojoints,

Will this garage be able to supply you with a certificate for your Insurance Company.

I use ADS for my Bongo servicing and although they have always delivered on what they have promised, I get the impression they are not auto electricians. Very interested to know how you get on as I want Cruise control but the insurance thing has always put me off.
Hope it all goes OK.

The auto elec guys who ADS use have also never fitted this type of cc to a Bongo either. That's why I thought it was best to leave it with ADS to fit it - it's not rocket science, as far as I can tell.

My insurer just wants proof of 'professional' fitment.

I have tried to join Bongo Fury in case the fitting instructions are available as a fact sheet, but everyone's out of the office now - just my luck! :(

It never made it as a factsheet so you've not missed out there, I've just checked on my computer & can't find the instructions, must have been on my old one, it was over 3 years ago, from memory, here goes -

The vacuum for it is easy to find, if you've removed your egr, you can just tap in on that supply rail (you can anyway) or there's a spare vacuum connection in front of & on the passy side of the engine, either part 4340 or the one below on here - http://lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/c ... 1of02.html just make sure it's actually sucking a vacuum with the engine runnning, I remember someone fitted to there & it had been blocked with something inside.
The speedo connection was on the back of the speedo cluster - "SP+" I think I used which I found on the same circuit track as the position Simon used on his instructions.
The servo unit was mounted under the drivers seat to the front, I think it may be on or close to one of the bolts that holds the engine cover/seat clamp, the cable from that then runs around the edge of the space, there are even holes in the metalwork to allow it to pass through, so it comes in behind the fuel pump to fix to & operate the throttle.
The control unit I mounted behind the dash, found an earth there too, can't remember where the power supply came from, but it's an ignition supply. the cables I think run under the carpet & there are grommets under there to run it through to the servo.
Can't remember if there're any other connections, but it shouldn't take much more than a couple of hours even for a complete novice.
By the time I've typed this, someone's probably sent you the destructions

This (not very good) pic I found shows the servo/actuator (pink arrow) & the throttle control cable (blue arrow)

Instead of linking the actuator to the handbrake lever and then that effing great pushrod, I'd have just linked the cable to the wee arm on the fuel pump....

That's my dual control set up   That's what I use when I'm bleeding the coolant to operate the throttle
Also doubles up as a seat prop in emergency situations

Thanks folks - passed info to ADS.

No factsheet yet, and I think that would be really useful to do the job right, so prizes to anyone who can turn one up. ;)

The instructions in the kit are pretty good, read them and apply a bit of common sense to the Bongo's layout and it's not that difficult. In fact the Bongo is easier than many because it already has a spare vacuum takeoff point on the tube that runs down the front of the engine block so you don't need to cut into any pipes to find a supply.

I fitted one of these in an afternoon, never done it before, and it wasn't difficult.

As Scanner says the vacuum take off is from the vertical metal pipe on the front of the engine, accessed from under the passenger seat. You will need a torch to see it.

Small 'T' piece comes off, pull off the rubber cover with pliars just gripping the very end, not the metal bit.

Bear in mind that behind the speedo are two blue/white wires. Now you know that it is obvious which one you want to connect to.

I think it was Simon Jones did Bongo specific instructions.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

When I fitted mine, my insurance company wanted proof that it was fitted correctly and stated that letter from a suitably qualified professional person was acceptable. Their definition of such person was someone with a qualification in automotive electrical engineering and who worked in the industry. I found a guy who had a C&G in said subject and had his own business doing electrical work on cars. He tested it and signed to say that it was OK. They would not accept a letter from a mechanic or someone who tinkers with cars.

It took me about 4-5 hours but I could do it again a lot faster.
