Towbar Kit for 2001 Bongo

Post by MrSniff » Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:07 am

Hello,

Having owned our Bongo for 18 months or so now we are looking at adding a few extra bits...

I am hoping to fit a towbar to our Bongo (mostly for use with a towbar mounted backbox) and have done a fair amount of looking at different ones. Our bongo is a 2001 SG5W Aero, but all the kits seem to state either models SGL3,SGL5,SGL11 & SGLW or a generic "Bongo 1995 on". Can anyone tell me whether these kits will fit ok (most likely the kit offered on the website here: can anyone give me their view?) - I guess I'm also gonna have to cut the Aero bumper for any of the kits (eek)..?

Thanks for any help!

We have a 2003 Aero with a towbar fitted from the BF shop (A1 towing Sheffield towbar) The lower section of the bodykit had to be cut a little, however the towball cover hides most of the cut. I don't think any kits would sit low enough to avoid the bodykit.

Hope this helps

All the best

David.

We fit the A1 and yes it needs a little cut if aero fitted, I have a couple of pictures I took of the cut before fitting the ball I will try and post up later, or PM me.

The A1 towbar is the best one to go for if you are using a back box. Other brands can cause the box to bounce a little. The A1 isnt the best looking but it is rock solid and very competively priced. I used mine with the Thule esi Back and Thule Box.

Avoid the Anker towbar, the 4 bike rack from Mottex on a recent trip to the new forest (60 miles) bent the bracket the ball is bolted to! Anker clearly will tell me I overloaded the tar!

Thanks for the replies, all. The A1 towbar sounds like the way to go - I'd better find my spanner...

Yes the A1 ones are a little industrial looking but we fit loads and they tell me the engineer them to pull the back end of the car rather than bend or break, I prefer that type of engineering myself.

I have uploaded some pics of how I fit them on a full aero Bongo to my facebook page.

Should help anyone see how to do it.

A1 kit gets my vote too, I've given mine a serious amount of stick over the last few years, with a bakrak & heavy backbox as well as trailers full of logs, scrap metal etc. Not even a hint of a problem with it 8)
