Fitting front Fogs from Mazda MPV
My facelift Bongo didn't have factory fitted front fog lights. I have worked on a couple of Mazda MPV's in the past, so I offered up a broken one behind the blanking plates in the bumper. Lo and behold they are an exact fit in shape and also to the moulded fixing points. So, I had a look on eBay and bought two good ones for £20. Last weekend I took the bumper off, cut out the blanking plates and installed them. No mess no fuss. I routed the wiring from the aftermarket lights that had been fitted and all done in about 90 minutes.
If anyone wants to to the same, you want the fog lamps from a 1999 to about 2002 (pre facelift MPV) and they should be fine !!
Next job might be to have a look at MPV column stalks as they are the other way round...
Regards
Tony

Thanks for the advice about the fog lights. I will keep my eyes open for a set.A1tony wrote:My facelift Bongo didn't have factory fitted front fog lights. Why would you want the stalks the other way round? They are correct on the Bongo. All the 'other' cars we drive are the wrong way round because they are all designed for LHD and then converted and they don't bother swapping the stalks round.
Re: Fitting front Fogs from Mazda MPV
I drive a lot of cars, all of which are the euro way round. I like the idea of the all being the same as its one less thing to think about. I also have a set in the garage to play about with so it will probably cost very little. Having looked at the two together, it is the Bongo that has the modified ones as they have extra parts that reach around the column to actuate the switches.
Saying all this, I just acquired a Shogun Sport and they are the same way round as the Bongo. !!!
Just tinkering...

Here are a couple of pics (hopefully !)
Assume I have cut out the hole in the bumper with a Jigsaw. The light is offered up from the back. There are three holes for screws along the top that line up with three mounting holes in the bumper. The bottom clip needs a small hole drilling in it and lining up to the lower mounting hole. If you dont get the clips with the lights, you might need to make something up, but its easy to do.

One returned to the vehicle and wired up, it should looke like this. Even the reflectors in the lamps match the style of the main lights.

I suggest if you find someone selling a pair, ask them for the loom and plug on the back too. It will save you time when you come to wiring them up. Mazda are very good at using parts bins for different models and there are various bits of MPV that might be usable. I have a whole fusebox full of micro fuses and relays for example.
Hope this helps...

Good find there Tony
May cause a bit of confusion though if peeps don't look at the pics, yours is actually a "New shape", the "Face lift" was from 97-99 which is basically the "old shape" with a few changes.

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

How do you tell the difference? I'm never quite sure whether mine's a new shape or faceliftmissfixit70 wrote:Good find there TonyMay cause a bit of confusion though if peeps don't look at the pics, yours is actually a "New shape", the "Face lift" was from 97-99 which is basically the "old shape" with a few changes.

Yours is a New shape, cos it's got the new shape headlights, grille, bumper & rear end (post 99?). The Facelift is basically the Old shape with a highe paint line, a couple of trim differences, different fogs I think, can't remember what else. the info is out here somewhere

Thanks MF, how do you know so much about our Bongo? (I bet you used that search functionmissfixit70 wrote:Yours is a New shape, cos it's got the new shape headlights, grille, bumper & rear end (post 99?). Re: Fitting front Fogs from Mazda MPV
Sometimes I have to use the search function (it's why it's there
) or refer to my library of bookmarked topics as I've got a crap memory, but in this instance twas just my memory, hence a bit sketchy on the difference between old shape & facelift.

Re: Fitting front Fogs from Mazda MPV
Okay mine is the later shape with lights etc and it's also a Sept 1999. I would hope anyone thinking about it would check the piccies first !! The lamps probably won't fit the earlier ones, but i bet there is a Mazda out there with ones that will !!
Probably best that we don't let the breakers know what we are doing or the salvage price will rocket.
Also the car is called A Mazda MPV. Not very original but it doesn't have any other name !!. They come up occasionally on eBay because the Turbo on the diesel ones can fail, sucking all the oil out and seizing the engine very quickly. For the older MPV's it's just not worth repairing them, so they get scrapped.

i've always considered having the indicator stalk on the right hand side to be plain wrong too. its the same on my impreza , where being a manual its a real pain as you always seem to want to change gear & indicate at the same time. too much to do & not enough hands to do it with. not as much of an issue with the bongo being auto yet still a "not natural" action to me!

Re: Fitting front Fogs from Mazda MPV
That's a good find with the MPV fogs A1Tony!
Rule of thumb guide for bongo "marques"
Mark 1's (M-R reg) Orange rear indicator strips, cloth interior, dark and light grey plastics utilized on interior trim. Lower two tone painted "swage line".
Mark 1 facelifts (R-T Reg) Clear rear indicator strips, velour trimmed interior, larger use of light grey plastics on interior trim, painted swage line moves to the middle of the body if two toned.
Mark2 "new shapes" Yet more revised detailed interior trim changes, biggest visual difference to the exterior. One piece contoured headlights/indicators,new front slam panel is now two quarter panels, different bumpers (standard, standard with bolt on spoiler, Aero bumper (one piece bumper similar to a standard bumper with spoiler) New rear light clusters with moulded extremities, full "light" centre panel between the new rear lights. Rear bumper remains unchanged (though some have "spats" bonded on, or a full length diffuser) Freetop versions of new shape bongo's raise a little higher when lifted.
Mine's a "mark1" bongo, revised to "new shape"
Used to look like this....

Now looks like this....
