Leisure battery losing charge

Post by zigzag » Wed Aug 10, 2011 5:09 pm

My leisure battery starts the day charged, usually from a hookup, but when I park up for a day the charge drops so that by the evening it is no longer cooling the fridge. Is it time to splash out on a new battery?

Possibly ....
Do you have a Split Charge relay installed to charge from the alternator whilst moving ?
If so have you checked the TWO fuses one close to each battery, to make sure they haven't blown (if one has blown, its best to replace both fuses) and hence not charging.
What sort of fridge is it ? A compressor fridge will run for between 2-4 days depending on how big a L/B you have fitted on average. Do you know what capacity the L/B is rated at, the normal sizes are between 80 and 120 Amp/Hrs ?

If the battery has had a chance to get fully charged (this can take a day or two) & is still losing charge in the course of a day ( I assume it's a compressor fridge & it used to last longer doing the same job, ie no extra load or drains on it?) then it's probably time for a new one, they only have so many cycles in them. How old is it, size & type? Has it been discharged below @10v at all/often? What voltage is it showing when fully charged & left with no load for a couple of hours?
I've just replaced mine after 3 years, Numax 110amp hour, it had a hard life, so can't complain

Do you have two cigar lighter sockets in the rear, one above the other?

Thanks for the replies. I have replaced one of the split charger fuses and that seems to be OK. The battery is 80Ah and is trickle charged between trips. Because it used to perform much better I've decided that it is time for a new one.
