Should know this but.........
To gain a bit more access to the top hose stub as it leaves the head would this work? This elbow is just part of the air intake isn't it?

Yup, just part of the air intake, good opportunity to remove some of the crap in there due to the egr, BUT that connection on to the hose at the bottom can be a bugger to reconnect, may be as much of a fanny as connecting your temp probe onto the top hose stub

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

I'm just glad i was blessed with pixie hands....!
Wont the timing belt cover be a little hindrance too!!?

With Kirsty on that one... Had to reconnect that hose coming up from the intercooler myself after it had disconnected when the guy at Bell Hill couldn't get his hands in... That's another story...

What I was thinking (wondering) was can the elbow just be pushed to one side still attached to the hose?

There is a bit of movement there, but I reckon by the time you add up the extra time & aggro undoing the bolts, (back one is a bit awkward from memory) & then doing it back up afterwards (after you've found & fished out the bolt/s you've dropped), it's still going to be quicker/easier doing it as it is with a small ratchet & 7mm socket, or a 7mm ratchet ring spanner, but I'm happy to be proved wrong if it is a quicker/easier way

(7mm is to tighten a jubilee clip for those that don't know what we're on about

)

That's why I was asking if it could be pushed to one side still connected to that hose. It's only rubber (the hose) and should flex shouldn't it?
Only reason for making a 'bit' of room is that I watched Kirsty fitting mine (and A.N.OTHER). She didn't use any bad language at the time but it looked a bit of a cow to get at the Jubilee to tighten it. Having looked at it, I was thinking that if the elbow could be shifted out of the way it would make room to get at the Jubilee. May be enough room for me to do it despite timing belt cover. Dunno - that's why I'm asking.

There isn't a lot of give in that pipe going down to the inter-cooler... I've had the inter-cooler off from underneath as well a few months back & after taking off the three bolts at the back & loosening the clips on the pipes either side, all the rubber is quite stiff...

I just completely undid the clip, wrapped it round the pipe, reconnected under the Archimedes type screw fastener a couple of turns, poked a slim screwdriver under the clip to prize out slightly to allow the sensor, (Being careful NOT to damage the top hose!!) poked it under wher you see it fitted..
& hand tightened, so as to hold the sensor firmly in place, but not to possibly crush it!!??

Just tape it to the top hose....little or no differance......
Perhaps you understand why we go for the back of the cylinder head....again little differance.
It seems a simple job is being made difficult.......By the time you have done all that messing about you could also have dropped a bit of coolant......cut the top hose...inserted a inline sensor and bled the thing.......AND....your sensor would be in the coolant flow.....
Not for the average DIY'er though....

Were you draining the power steering fluid at the same time?

What you're saying about 'simple job made difficult' is so true, but Jaylees comment ..'great fun messing...' is also very true (in my case.)
