5w 30 & 10w 40 oil only £10 for 5 litres in asda too (yours is a a 2.5td, there'is no 2.4 )

In mpg terms ?W-40 is worse than ?W-30 - more internal drag in the engine when warmed up.

the first number 5/10 refers to the oil viscosity, the second refers to temperature range, so 10- oil is more viscous than 5-, but then you may as well go for 0- if your that concerned or maybe even knife edge your crank lol ah the old cosworth tuning days lol the W refers to the viscosity being tested from cold not at running temperature

Surely the first number 5,10,15 etc, -W is the cold viscosity and determines how easy the engine turns over when cold and how quickly the oil will circulate.

The second number - 30, 40, 50 etc. is the viscosity when up to running temperature and can have an effect on MPG.

Gosh, I researched this recently and have almost forgotten what I found out! As I recall the first number refers to the designed MINIMUM viscosity at operating temperatures and the second to the MAXIMUM intended viscosity when cold. The 'w' stands for winter i.e. the coldest anticipated starting conditions.

10-40w or 5-30w or 5-40w or 10-30w are perfectly OK in the UK. Most Bongos are a bit long in the tooth now and were not designed for 0-30w variants, designed for modern very close tolerance engnies. The ideal oil would not change viscosity with temperature.

As an aside, I did try to take advantage of a previous 'bargain' offer at ASDA, buying a 5litre can of branded oil very reasonably. I couldn't make the change imediately so it was a day or too later I noticed the oil smell. The can had leaked filthy oil in the back of the van. On closer inspection it was clear that the snap off tab had been cunningly superglued in place and it became clear that some cheapskate had bought the oil, used it and refilled the can with his old oil before returning for a refund! ASDA were very good about it in the circumstances and accepted that I would hardly be pointing out the situation if I were responsible.

Went for the weekly shop yesterday (Asda) all they had was the £10 mineral oil which i used to put in my old motorbikes (not diesel of course) & when i change mine i want to put semi in~is it semi you saw in your local Asda Kirsty??

The 5w-30 I bought is Semi-synth and advertised as Ford petrol or diesel spec

Asda Fully Synthetic 5w40/5w30 sells for £20.00 For 5litres.

It was most definitely semi synth for £10 for 5litres, correctly rated for the turbo diesel, may have just been a short term offer, looks like they're not even listing a 5 litre semi synth online ATM.
