Electronic ignition for the V6?

Post by Laverda981 » Wed Jul 13, 2011 12:09 am

Hi,

I am new to forums and Bongos so here goes. . . . :)

I have just bought a 2002 V6 from JAL Imports and should be collecting it by August so long as Phil and I do not fall out big time!!! :?

Does anyone know if I can buy electronic ignition for my V6? I stopped buying cars and bikes with distributors decades ago.

Not heard of one, there have been a few reports of people needing to change the distributor once it gets badly worn but not that many to date.

The V6 has an ignition pack....so electronic ....it just has a distributor like early leccy ignitions for the spark rather than the later coil pack types used on modern engines...

Yes, but it is the distributor that I want to get rid of, rotor arms are crude.

Sounds liek a lot of messing for no gain at all. Mine has never had a problem and I am not aware of it being raised on here as an issue. I guess you could approach lumenition if you wanted to. I would put your money towards LPG instead if it were me. (oh actually thats what I did do..!)

Works well enough if kept well so why change it, it may be from the dark ages but it's easy to work on and much more advanced than the old old old school . A nice intermediate system

Thanks for the replies, I will see how I get on with it and only worry about it if it becomes an issue. I have just spent the weekend in Devon and seen more Bongos here than anywhere else. I can't wait to collect mine B-)

Hi Laverda.

If the V6 does have leccy ignition as said about - and surely it does - then that's all you need to know. You can't 'improve' on it.

Even leccy ignitions need a distributor, so there's no easy way to get rid of that - at least not without building a customised system with 6 coils...
