Power loss

Post by rocketron » Wed Oct 18, 2006 2:24 pm

I thought this worth posting as others may have a similiar problem with a marked power loss.
Recently took a trip to Cornwall and on the last fuel stop decided to floor it for the remaing 40 miles and it just got faster & faster.Thought it was rocket fuel I'd bought at Esso,as the van actually accelerated uphill!
To explain-I have owned this Bongo for 18 months and never been impressed with its performance despite the rave reviews on this website.
Perhaps I should have realised that something was not quite right when I was blown away by a fellow Bongolier in the first month of ownership. In my defence I have never driven another one so accepted that it was a bit of a donkey-although I know differently now.
When I arrived in Truro however I could not shut off the engine!pulled fuses/battery lead but to no avail. At that point decided to offload the luggage and drive up to local Mazda dealer, hoping they might be open.

Out of luck and decided then to call out the RAC who arrived inside the hour & did not take long to work out that he would need to stop the engine by stopping the fuel flow.He tried cleaning the fuel shut-off valve and actually trimmed the end square,a mistake, I found out later.
Had to leave the vehicle and get back there on the monday and then got the bad news- £128 for replacement valve and 3/4days wait for the part!
Was expecting this but fortunately a very helpful chap called Mike, the service manager at Rapid Fit service part of the dealership and a fellow bongo owner saved the day by ringing around & locating a replacement pattern part and finished the job the same day£77 fitted!

I still can't get over the power increase and fuel consumption has not changed which makes it a double bonus. :D :D

Glad to hear to have got it sorted. Whereabouts is the valve you refer to?

Under the drivers seat.RAC guy clamped fuel line with mole grips, undid a rather tight nut (probably factory tight) and unscrewed to remove.
Not a long job-but its made me very suspicious of the claimed mileage when purchased last year.

Glad you have found some more performance Ron, and a shame about the valve. I'm not clear though, as to what your extra speed is due to. Something going on with the cut-off valve? or something else? Was the valve not letting enough fuel through?
There has been talk on here before about pumps being turned down for MOTs and not turned back up again, but that can't be your phenomenon I think.
Did the turbo suddenly come unstuck?
Mine has never seemed much in the perfomance stakes - 0 - 60 in about 17 seconds is not my idea of good, treacle off a spoon, more like.
