We use a Thule 9403 which is the older version of the current 9503. It has carried 3 full size mountain bikes bikes. The only issue to be wary of is that depending on the bikes the frames may rub together. This can be preventing with inexpensive pipe foam from a DIY store.

For our 9503, we did away with the tilt mechanism. The hook bits and plastic handled scew bits were removed and replaced with long allen bolts and some thick alu plate to clamp the mechanism together. I'm sure there are a few ways of doing this. With our Towsure bar, the boot clears the rack by a few mm (close tolerance stuff ;-) ) without any bikes on.

It'll take 3 bikes, but you'll need to turn the bars through 90deg with the one closest to the boot to prevent fowling. We also did a minor mod to allow a bike trailer to be strapped to it more easily.

We have the new Thule 928 with 4th bike adaptor fitted.

Clamps firmly to the tow ball, solid as a rock and tilts to allow the boot to open.

Pricey but quality.
Why?...........Because somebody might wave back.
