Hi, I am about to purchase a petrol bongo, 2.5 V6 engine but on talking to a dealer in scotland he warned me against it totally, saying they guzzle the fuel and the most I will get is high teens per gallon.
can anyone advise. im wondering whether i should ditch it and get a diesel

Hi there,
On a decent run, driving sensibly, we get around 27 mpg from Trev - our 1999 2.5 V6 AFT.
Around town the mpg is about 15, but what else would you expect from 2.5l petrol engine, Bongo or not!

Hi - go for it - they are smooth and powerfull. As you will see from my sig i get between 24 and 28mpg depending on how and where i drive

This is what our V6 has done in terms of MPG since we bought it;

The recent droop was mainly down to a faulty spark plug and less longer distance travel over the winter, since the last service the MPG has started to improve again.

The economy of the diesel isn't much better TBH, although it's a better tow vehicle, most people run in the high 20's & diesel tends to be more expensive (although you can run on a mix of veg oil), the 2 litre petrol isn't much different either, as it's a smaller engine working harder to shift a 2 tonne brick

Go for the 2.5 V6 Petrol, its a pleasure to drive, i love it (everytime)
I am sure you will be surprised (as i was), at how smooth, responsive and FUN it is.
Petrol costs ... Pah ... its a leisure/hobby vehicle (mine is anyway) so fuel costs are irrelevant to me, they are what they are and i/we cant change it.
My ONLY regret is that i didnt get one earlier!

This is the problem, in a nutshell. You don't drive a Bongo just cos its a car. It is an addictively fun and beautiful vehicle to drive and to tour in. So you have to think laterally and say what if I had another pet like a dog or a cat. What would the food cost, the vets bills etc. be. And would it open up the same opportunities as a campervan. The best way to cut your fuel consumption is to think more about what journeys you REALLY want to / have to make, and save your budget for those. Really, the yardstick should be MPM, not MPG (MPM = miles per month - I just invented that

And don't forget depreciation etc., which is generally much lower on a Bongo than on yer average car.
And don't forget a Bongo allows you bid for good 2nd hand cookers and fridges and stuff on ebay that you might otherwise have to pay Currys prices for.
And when you have to downsize your house cos the Bongos fuel bill has bankrupted you, you won't need a furniture removal van




etc. etc.
As you can see, I've given it all a little thought



I literally stroked and patted my Bongo and whispered sweet words to it (sorry, 'her') before I left it to go into work today. I often do that. How sad am I

I had the same thoughts when ours was purchased but as I already run a Rover 75 V6 my mind was made up and we haven't looked back since

I cant remember how long ive had my v6 now it has always done 21ish to the gallon, although i am now getting nearly 23 after sorting a few major issues one including the timing being out, mine has always been used as a daily runner to work, on a run i can get 25ish b ut i reckons that will be better now aswell. At the end of the day it depends how heavy your right foot is.

Thanks guys. I think i am going to just go for it having seen the diesel fuel consumption not much better. i am thinking of converting to lpg but dealer says we have to drop the spare tyre if so because the conversion takes up the space where the tyre was. any ways around this do you know? im quite excited now! and hey its greener than flying

And the RAC/AA will sort you out if you have a blow out with no spare...
