Differential Oil Seal

Hi guys,

Had a puncture last week (NSF) which was replaced right away but yesterday noticed shedloads of what can only be gearbox oil all over my nearside wishbone. As far as I can tell it seems like its coming from the front diff. So unfortunately I think the oil seal has gone.

What do I need to fix this? Is it something that I can do myself? If I get a garage to repair it, will it need to be a specialist and do I need to source any special parts? What would the repair likely cost?

Lots of questions I know.... sorry!...

I called the AA and they did sweet FA to help, saying that its not drivable and is dangerous.

There isn't any funny noises at the moment so I don't think any serious harm has been done but not going to drive the van until its sorted.

I have a long drive to Switzerland in 2 weeks so really worried that its not going to be sorted in time, especially if it have to use my spending money to fix the van

Any help appreciated guys...

Have you tried the recommended garages list in the members area to see if there is one near you?

My 2WD was dropping oil over the nsf wishbone - tunred out a shocker had popped its O-clogs and pumped out the damping oil contents over surrounding items

is your motor a 4wdrive by any chance ??.
if it is, did you replace the puntured wheel/trye with one of the correct size and aspect ratio ??.

thanks alan i read that post 4 times before i answered. . and still missed the bloody obvious.

Just took a quick look see in the manual for any likely snags......looks straight forward to me and the manual also shows and instructs that the seal is levered out with a screwdriver.... So once your Nearside driveshaft is out......your at the seal....
Seals available from JAS.... as a set of 2 for both sides or the large nearside seal singly

Its not a particularly hard job, but it does involve some the main cv nut which can be a pain to get off,like most car repairs, the actual repair is only 5 mins, stripping away what you need to is what takes the time! If you want a step by step let me know and i'll sort 1 out and send it to you

Considering Julian has a business to run, I think a special round of applause is deserved for the effort he puts in giving advice on here, and for offers over and above the call of duty

I can't imagine the local Peugeot main dealer coming online in the Peugeot Owners Forum and offering support like that

Couldn't agree more, very welcomed advice received and makes me feel that its something that I could deal with myself without too much trouble

I'm getting my local garage to give it a quick once-over first to make sure nothing bad has happened to the diff first.

I'm ordering the seal today so when I come to fit it i'll be sure to take photos and document my work as a thank you.

£20 for the part, plus another tenner for diff oil and a couple of hours work (at my speed) and jobs a goodun. Was really worried it was going to be a hard fix.

I can only put this whole issue down to the fact that the van came with 225 40 R18 tyres and they are being shredded due to their profile. When the n/s pucture happened I was pretty much riding on the rims which i'm sure caused the diff seal to break up (it might have been worn to begin with).

So on top of the seal replacement, I have got to get a whole new set of 225 50 R18 (accelera) fitted this afternoon at a cost of £360 all-in.

Anyone know the best place to source a n/s front diff oil seal? Searched everywhere and no-one has gone one, except the breakers which defeats the object.

Argh!!!!

Fully dissasembled and oil seal (as above) is wrong size! Oil seal supplied is too large to fit

Makes me wish I had purchased a service manual.

Jas has now kindly sent me a drawing and the correct part numbers. Apparently its at the diff end of the drive shaft and therefore needs the driveshaft seal kit... doh!!!

Hi,

The oil seals are as you say are at the diff,the outer seals are just dust seals.
