folding mirrors

Post by bigdaddycain » Tue Oct 10, 2006 1:33 am

My drivers side mirror started playing up recently, when i clicked the switch to"fold out" the motor continued to buzz even though it was fully extended.(drivers side) I think they lock into place when extended, but my mirror has more play in it than the passenger side,so i attempted to remove the whole unit for inspection. How do you get them off? i removed the door card, undone the bolt at the back of the mirror, wiggled it, ... nothing! it will not budge. As a temporary measure i have clicked the switch to "closed" and taped the mirrors into position to shut the motor up! not ideal really as i,m now restricted to 75mph as any faster results in wind resistance trying to fold the mirrors back in.

As well as the bolt inside there are two bolts on the outside underneath the plastic cover at the base of the mirror stem where it mates with the door.
Your symptoms sound similar to mine, you need to dissassemble the gearbox once you have taken the mirror off, quite lengthy to get it apart!. What you'll probably find is that one of the gear shafts which is made of plastic has broken away from the base of the gearbox. You need to take all the other gears out first which are on metal shafts.
I drilled through the base of the gearbox and replaced the plastic shaft with a length of 9mm steel ( the shaft of a drill to be precise). I then bonded this into the gearbox and touch wood it's been fine ever since.

Mine both fold in fine. What I do get is odd behaviour when someone has brushed too heavily past the mirror. When I put the key in the ignition, t fails to detect that it is out, and carries on around to face forward. Stwitching off and on again resets it - could that account for the behaviour you are seeing?

Cheers

The outer cover is held on with a couple of push in plastic plugs so it's just a case of prising the cover off, be warned I snapped one of the lugs retaining the clip but it had been off before and glued!
