Planning to a complete coolant flush and coolant change.
Can someone suggest the best coolant to use?
Ideally I would like to to be able to mix it with water (when topping up),

Use FORTE COOLANT FLUSH to clean the system out, you put it into the warm engine coolant and leave it for about 30 minutes then drop the coolant and flush out thoroughly, change the stat use a genuine Mazda one, and change the water pump if you can.

I've also used carplan red but in a 50/50 mix. This seems to have an additive in that during the first few weeks coats the inside of your system with a protective layer. A great idea, but if you use a low coolant alarm it keeps coating the probes you've screwed into the header tank -you then have to remove and clean them a few times.

I am a Car Plan red user too...... After extensive research and confirmation from Tetrosyl (makers of Car Plan).... the coolant is as close to FL-22 Mazda coolant chemistry wise as possible........
Here is the differences between IAT coolants - Green/Blue UK G11 coolants & OAT G12+ Coolant on various materials..... Top is IAT and Bottom is OAT.... Kincaid is correct too saying OAT "coats" the system with a protective layer
I guess from the graphic you can see one reason why some Bongo's have "rust" or brown deposits and or coolant.... incorrect coolant chemistry and mixed coolants are the lead suspects
The Majority of Japanese coolant ( well most of Asia) is made by Golden Cruiser and they colour is to Manufacturers spec, hence the multi coloured Coolants we see in Japanese vehicles....
Unfortunately that isn't helpful with us ignorant British who slope into Halfrauds and the staff there hand you a coolant based on it's colour and or it's "universal" status....of which there are not many......well only 3 in the world - Prestone yellow is one in the UK that you can get in several places....inc Wilkinsons/Tesco and will get you out of trouble as it mixes with ALL coolants....with no loss of long life properties.

I have been using Prestone since you recomended it and so far so good. Unfortunately my locals stores didnt stock it but a supplier on ebay was able to supply.
