How to change the thermostat

Post by gazza » Mon Apr 18, 2011 9:37 pm

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere on the site. But cannot find it.
Is there a fact sheet for changing the thermostat.
I can get the rear most bolt out , but not the front one.

You undo the bolt holding the dipstick tube, and move it out of the way, that should give you room to get to the other bolt on the thermostat housing.
Lost without my Bongo.

Thanks for the reply.
So you leave the housing bolted to the engine block?
Do you remove the large coolant hose below it?

Thanks

I removed the big hose and all the other hoses connected to the stat, with a bit of fiddling and jiggling, makes it easier to fit the stat, plus i was doing a complete flush and rinse through with a hose and i was fitting a new water pump.

I've just done mine and didn't disconnect the pipes, but did move the dipstick tube.

It was easy enough to get the stat out, but would have been easier to get the new one in with the pipes disconnected.

I also swapped the water pump as I spotted it was leaking after swapping the stat - this would be a wise move as it seems like it should be replaced as a service item rather than when you have a problem.

It is what the Japanese recommend and i the main do when they change coolant on a 5yr cycle..... Stat/Pump/Coolant = trouble free motoring.... and for the £38 for a pump....no brainer...while the system is "down"...
