Bongo kms or miles
Hi hope someone can help. I've just sold my 1998 bongo with 112000 on the clock the car had a conversion in 2006 from kms to miles. But does this mean that they rework the odometer or is this still reading kms.
As the guy who bought it is say that is miles and not kms and he is going to sue me for misleading him.
Help please

Re: Bongo kms or miles
Was it just the face plate that you had changed so it read in mph???? if this is so your numbers will still click over in kms
Re: Bongo kms or miles
I don't know in the handbook it just had a conversion date.
But when it was imported the cambelt was done at 68000.
By the way i've only sold it to buy a newer one.

Re: Bongo kms or miles
Difficult one, lots of dealers fit a speedo face and so still run KM odometer, some fit a chip and so the odmeter ran KM to that point and then from then onwards ads miles on, others do same and alter the odometer dial to reflect the miles equivilant, and the few and worst, do the same and get their maths completely wrong and shave another few 10,000 of thousands miles off. My personal view is chip to convert and leave odo dial miles from then on on top of the KM it ran in Japan, and write this all on the invoice and how much to deduct to get the miles ran.
A few pointers to know what happened, if it has a 110MPH face then it has been done with a face and odometer is KM or should be, anything else it has been done with a chip.

Re: Bongo kms or miles
Bongos can be converted to show mph but still read distance in km
or chipped to show all in miles
or even have the unit replaced with a similar from another car which is miles.
lastly it could be a combination where when it was chipped it showed kms before and miles after but not adjusted.
The only way to be sure is to drive it for a distance the you knoe to be true and see what the odeometer reads
Why does the buyer believe its in miles the MOT may still say miles but be in kms
In either way my laymans knowledge says he could only sue if he could proove you deliberatly missled and only for the difference in its value
we don't know how much you got for it and every car has a different value
but if I am correct you said it had done 70k miles so the difference on a 15 year old car's value is little (imho)
and in a car of this age condition is far more impotant than miles
If I was in your shoes I would say "sorry I allways thought it was km and still do but it was sold on condition" and leave it at that
I have no legal knowledge so don't just accept my advice but I don't think they would have much luck in court if they bothered

Re: Bongo kms or miles
It's very possible it read Km's up to the conversion (68,000k = 42,250m) then miles from then on,
(68,000 to 112,000) = 48,000miles
So...42,250 + 48,000 = 90,250 miles in total
But if you did the sale in good faith and had no intention to deceive then it would be a harsh judge that came down on you....However as the buyer....
He thought it had 70000 miles on the clock
In fact it has done 90000 miles
So you are having hassel over 20000miles
(68,000 to 112,000) = 48,000miles
So...42,250 + 48,000 = 90,250 miles in total

Re: Bongo kms or miles
A few things:-What does MOT say, mls or kms? With 2 vehicles with a car in front and the bongo behind let them drive for one mile according to the car. What does the odemeter say on the Bongo? Also, if MOT says mls and Bongo says kms on odemeter It can be changed with a bit of bother. Been there done that.

Don't rely on the MoT certificate it assumes the testing garage knew what it was we have certificates in both Miles and Kms, they can't tell just by looking either!

Re: Bongo kms or miles
Westonwarrior has the best idea - run a measured mile and check reading. I did this when I first bought mine.
TIP check your MOT sheet when you get it to see if it states the correct fig. I didnt check my first MOT sheet until a couple of days later and noted it stated miles instead of kilometres, although I told the mechanic before the test ! I had to pay an extra £10 to get another authorised MOT sheet printed out ! I now tell them the larger outer figs show as MPH and all the smaller inner figs, including trip, show as 'km/h'.

Seriously????
Sue you for misleading the distance covered on an import!! Not that the odometer reading is actually that important, condition & previous care and servicing are the crucial factors.
Does he have any idea of time/cost & certain outcome of such a fruitless threat?
What an idiot.
Settle out of court for a bannana.

Re: Bongo kms or miles
ok, did you ever reset the trip on the odometer whilst you filled up on a full tank the filled up again to see what mileage you was getting? if so what did you get?
if you got somewhere in the 200's then it read in miles, or if it was is the 300's ect?, if its the 200's then you was clocking in miles if it was in the 300's then you were getting km's.
Also if it had GA5R printed on the face of the speedo then it clocks in miles as well as shows MPH this is out of a Mazda 626 and is a direct replacement for the bongo which read's and clocks in KM'S and some people source these and swap them with the bongo one.

Hi thanks everyone.
As i don't have the van can't do any checks but i was getting about 320 to a tank of fuel if that helps.
All the mots say miles and the clock face went upto 180 mph.

Hi looks like it was reg in miles unless it was a real thirsty bugger..
I think your best bet is to report this to the TSO,they will get the vehicle checked and you have recorded your innocent concern.
Re: Bongo kms or miles
Who or what is TSO?
Re: Bongo kms or miles
If the clock face reads 0 - 180, then it has definitely been chipped and the odometersJamie P wrote:All the mots say miles and the clock face went upto 180 mph.
will be recording Miles, it's the easiest option for the importers.
Do as Haydn says and convert the original import kilometers to Miles.
