Cutting Out
Bought my Bongo in April and it's been relatively trouble free...1999 S plate old model 2.5 diesel.A couple of times during the summer it would cut out as I took my foot of the accelerator approaching junctions/roundabouts and take a bit of persuading to start again. These were isolated incidents and I didn't have any more until very recently when it has got a whole lot worse. When things are ok, the rev counter comes back to just above the second line between 0 and 1000 revs when approaching junctions with foot of the pedal. When things are not ok, the revs are just below this line and it jumps about a bit before stalling. One day in particular it was really bad and whilst driving with my foot on the accelerator the revs would just come back and the engine stalled a few times on the open road.I've replaced the fuel filter this week but it has not cured the problem.Don't fancy booking it into a garage with an intermittent fault. Does anyone know of any mechanics in the central scotland area who can diagnose faults on these diesel engines??

Re: Cutting Out
This is not uncommon
Do a search for "stalling" and you'll come up with loads of info to read through

Re: Cutting Out
Sounds the same as i had when I picked mine up, on the drive back same symptoms as you, turned out to be diesel pump seal. I can give you the name of the garage who sorted it if you want more specific details.
They fitted a clear pipe from a separate temporary diesel can and you could see the fuel flow slow and full of bubbles, once replaced the fuel shot up the pipe like a rat up a drainpipe!
Guys here suggested it and they were spot on!

UPDATE:
Tried numerous local garages including the local Mazda dealership and no one would attempt the job.Eventually broke down and the AA approved repairer also refused to undertake the work so the van was transported to McAllisters diesel specialists in Cumbernauld where it's been since Friday.Just phoned them and the pump had numerous leaking seals so has been overhauled and will be refitted later today/tomorrow.£705 plus VAT !!! Ouch If it stalls again after this I may commit harri-karri

Re: Cutting Out
Ouch - I'm sure you can buy a new pump at Wheelquick for (less than?) that price. Alternatively a rebuild should be cheaper than that price (Adrian at JapImports in Bury was going to get mine done but in the end it didn't need it, but I think he said around £250). Also, from old threads, this cutting out thing often turned out to be something inexpensive. If the Bongo runs properly after the work they've done, then I guess draw a line, move on, and enjoy Bongoing. But if it still has a problem........I'd be down on them with some acid questioningGOMEZ wrote:UPDATE:

Re: Cutting Out
note your car is a 99, is it the later type pump with electronics? if so then that price is about right for a full rebuild as they (should) replace the sensors etc.
From your description first port of call should have been the tank breather, and to try running the car without the filler cap in

Re: Cutting Out
it's the old model.the tank breather was checked at my local garage when the filter was replaced.Tried the filler cap off but still the same. A number of mechanics looked at it and could see that the pump was leaking.I had hoped it was just the 'front seal' as suggested by Ian Taylor who sold me the van and others on the forum. However these guys have tested the pump and there was other seals gone hence the pump overhaul. It does seem a tad steep but I was left with few options, and if the pump was gubbed it needed fixing and they are the guys every other garage in the area sends them to321Away wrote:note your car is a 99, is it the later type pump with electronics? if so then that price is about right for a full rebuild as they (should) replace the sensors etc.

Re: Cutting Out
I guess you are right. By the time you'd tried to get it anywhere else the fuel costs and hassle would have amounted to the same anyway. Also Wheelquicks price was pump only, not labour so, overall you've done the best you can. Lets hope its fixed and stays fixed (I assume it was out of Ian's Taylors warranty BTW?)GOMEZ wrote:it's the old model.the tank breather was checked at my local garage when the filter was replaced.Tried the filler cap off but still the same. Julian - there have always been rumours around here that pump replacement / fix on later models might run into £thousands and result in vehicle being uneconomical to repair. Are these rumours exaggerated do you think?
Re: Cutting Out
Ian gave me a 3 year warranty with the van but unfortunately the garage overhauled the pump before I got agreement from the warranty people so there not interested.I thought it was just going to be the external seals which wouldn't have been covered.A bad day all roundmikeonb4c wrote:I guess you are right. Hi,you wont get much change from £4000.00 for a New pump.mikeonb4c wrote:I guess you are right. Re: Cutting Out
Mine did exactly this a few weeks ago. A few mornings it took a while turning over before firing, and then eventually began stalling at low revs (slowing down at junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, etc) until eventually stalled and wouldn't start.GOMEZ wrote:Bought my Bongo in April and it's been relatively trouble free...1999 S plate old model 2.5 diesel.A couple of times during the summer it would cut out as I took my foot of the accelerator approaching junctions/roundabouts and take a bit of persuading to start again. Called the AA out, and he found that the primer on the fuel pump was leaking diesel and sucking in air, hence the cutting out.
Fitted another one as a temp fix and it was fine. Will get it sorted properly next month when it has a service.
Probably a bit late now

Cheers
Andrew
ps very impressed with the AA - from initial callout time, they had me going again within an hour, from the middle of the Brecon Beacons!!
