V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
Hi,
V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
--------------------------
Does anyone know where I can source one of these ... well 2 because I would need 2.
I am currently corresponding with JAS auto, via e-mail, but when I rang them they did not seem to stock them, so I am not holding out much hope.
My engine is the J5.
Has anyone tried this site?

Just searched the forums for japautosolutions.
It looks like people use it, so maybe a good source

Hi,
Yes I've used those guys for a cambelt, no worries. I've heard euro car parts do the belt and other parts for a slightly better price too.

Just a thought
but when your garage changes the cambelt ask them to check the condition of the 'cam seals' as their prone to perishing and leak oil
. We had ours done at the same time at a cost of £26, might be worth replacing anyway
.
Good luck, Izzy

Duh, I understood that replacing the Cam seals was quite an expensive job, or did you mean the Cambelt work was £26 as that sounds cheap as well ?wishmaster wrote:... Ah ha just found the original comments, yes the parts aren't that bad its the time to strip down and replace at 10-12 hours! http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... am#p397413

Re: V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
Good point. I had a new cambelt done on mine when it was imported. Then the camshaft oil seals started leaking so as part of that job I had yet another belt to be on the safe side. So I ended up paying quite a bit of labour when in hindsight I could have done it all in one go.
I would second the comment on getting the 4 camshaft oil seals changed whilst the belt is being done. Mine were around £9 each but whilst that part of the engine is apart it isn't that much extra work to do these, then you know it's pretty much all done.
Also worth checking the crankshaft oil seal whist it's apart, not so common but these have also been known to go.
These jobs are fairly labour intensive, whilst the parts needed by comparison still cost money but are relatively cheap, hence it is probably worth doing the lot at one go then you know you should be safe for many miles.
The guys you mentioned in your original post provided all the parts for this, delivery was quick and the price reasonable, plus they were of good quality.
One final note I would make is make sure the garage you use has the relevant info on torque settings etc, I would also feel more comforable if it were me if they were a bongo specialist ! Can't recall if the coolant has to come out for this cos I'm old and getting stupid !!
Anyway, good luck, job worth doing if it's needed.

Re: V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
Hi and thanks for the replies.
Yes i was looking for the cambelt kit because there is seepage round the cambelt cover, so I guess the seals will need doing.
My v6 has done about 80K Kilometres. The rocker cover gaskets are leaking slightly as well. I have the “V6 smell” which started my investigation.
I was wondering whether to just buy the belt and take a gamble on the tensioners , as it is such a well made engine.
Although the garage I am dealing with seems good and seem to know what they are talking about, - the guy has worked in a mazda dealership - they haven’t done a V6 bongo and I am a little nervous about them doing the job.
Are there any pitfalls they could fall into does anyone know, or are there any special tools that might surprise them mid - job?

Re: V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
Hi Simon,
From what I saw on mine, there is quite a bit of stuff that needed to come off to get the 2 covers off the cambelt, as it's a V6 there are 2 banks and 2 sets of camshafts remember.
I recall them taking off the undertray, scavenger fan, drive belts, alternator etc, and with the oil seals the disty etc also came off. You are then left with a load of pulleys, tensioners etc, that all have to be marked and locked so they cannot move and/or can be put back in exactly the same position.
The camshaft seals are behind the notched wheels that the cambelt drives, these were fairly hard to get off, removal and refitting of a new seal was relatively easy, they just get prised out carefully, and a new one put in and carefully pushed in with an appropriate tool.
On the bongo V6 all the guide wheels, tensioner etc are made of metal, not plastic so unless something has gone wrong, they are not so likely to suffer wear.
I really cannot remember if the coolant needs to come out, I'm 70% sure it did on mine due to a pipe getting in the way. If that is the case you have the age of dilema of do you trust someone else to properly refill and bleed the coolant.
Isn't Allens Vehicle services down your way? Might be worth asking them as they are a good bunch and know what they are talking about, far more than I do but experience certainly counts for alot.
If you have seepage of that V6 oil seal smell, deffo get the seals done, it only gets worse !!

Re: V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
Apole said "Also worth checking the crankshaft oil seal whist it's apart, not so common but these have also been known to go."
I had the 4 cam seals done when I had the cambelt done on import as they were leaking and had evidently been so for quite a while. The £26 would be for the seals themselves but as I say almost no additional labour cost as they are in the same part of the engine Fred at Discount Trucks said it wasnt so bad on labour costs as, like Andy said, it is in the same area and so the engine only gets taken apart once .... but now my crankshaft seal has started leaking so ive got 5 + hours of labour to stomach on Monday
I would also second the comment about Allans vehicle services; I had some quotes from him late last year and they were very good plus he is a Bongo guru and so you wont be worrying - peace of mind is priceless. I would say, dont cut corners on the tensioners given that they are as old as the cambelt and if they go you've got a number of hours of labour to pay for effectively twice ...

Re: V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
Hi Liz,
Yes I saw Fred in the week and he mentioned it. Feel for you. Exactly what happened with mine but with the camshaft seals. Had it all apart for one job, then 2-3 weeks later .....
The camshaft seal is alot rarer on the V6 than the other seals so you were quite unlucky there.
At least Fred is good and reasonably priced, plus getting rid of that smell is so nice !!

Re: V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
The coolant does have to be dropped
stat to heads pipe needs to come off, the one that flumixed me was how to get the dipstick off
goosed me for ages two nuts if i remember i didn't know they could be taken off but only pulled out
, some of the cover nuts are well hidden aswell and there is alot of them:roll: i was unlucky my tensioner was leaking its fluid, and a belt with a hole in it with a nice piece of rubber hanging of it which was wacking the crank pulley housing at the bottom of its rotation, along with the timing jumped a tooth on both cams on driver bank amongst tuther things, big learning curve

Re: V6 petrol Bongo Cambelt kit
Happy conclusion to this, took it to Allan’s and had the cam belt changed, seals done including crankshaft oil seal. Also had it Wax oiled and under sealed and serviced.

Hi Si
Looks like a list of all the jobs we've got to do this year, any chance of a pm for the costs (incl waxoil)
Cheers
