Help with strange engine noise *video*

I've just replaced the engine in my bongo, runs drives fine, but has a weird noise when revved.

Thought it may be the air con pump or the tensioners, disconnected those. Noise still there.

Pretty sure it's not the alternator.

Noise seems to be coming from injector pump side and *possibly* a faint rubery burning smell, although this is probably from having oily hands on the engine whilst it was being fitted.

Check the number one (left) exhaust manifold stud - it may be that starting to go. It's a common problem and not expensive to get fixed.

I'll check it, but I'm pretty sure it's not the studs as I've just fitted the manifold.

This happened to my Bongo at first I thought it was a belt squeak but turned out to be a small leak from the left of the exhaust manifold behind the alternator.

with the smell of burning rubber i would go for timing belt,did you check it/change it before fitting the motor,you havnt overtightened the other belts have you.or they could be just skidding spilt oil off,try taking the belts off,or squirt with wd or similar.
take off the turbo air pipes and see if the noise gets louder,it could be turbo.

It's definitely not tight alt/pwr ster/ ac belts.

I'll check the timing belt today, but it was all replaced and had a new tensioners fitted and I'm very sure (although will check) that it's not over tight.

I'm wondering if it could be the injector pump bearings?

sounds like the turbo mate, check all the hoses to it. even take the front hose off and have a look inside see if there is any play in the rotor

do the old waterboard check, get a metal rod with a lump of wood on the end,like a big joiners screwdriver,place it on the suspected part,and put your ear to the wood,it will amplify the noise fault if present.
watch yer fingers and thumbs though.

firstly give the belts a spray with wd40 with the engine running, that'll eliminate them, any reason you filmed from drivers side? would check the egr pipes for any small fractures or breaks. did you replace the cam belt? check the gaskets on the inlet elbow, doessnt sound like boosts escaping but could have a whistle effect. Did you replace the cam belt tensioner? have only ever seen 1 with bearing problem but its a possibility.

it appears that its a boost leak from the inlet manifold, when the boost pipe is disconnected from the turbo, the noise goes away. And if i spray wd on the manifold it appears to bubble when the engine is revved (with the boost pipe connected)

ill take it off and replace the gasket and see if that cures it.

Debee - tried PMing you but not done that before so not sure if it has worked.

After a monster journey all the way from Scrabster to Somerset in one go (560ish miles in about 12 hours) my beloved is now making EXACTLY the same noise as yours. It only does it when cold and stops after about 20 seconds of pulling away. If I then switch off for a few minutes and start again it'll do it again but only for a few seconds again. Also, and may be unrelated it seems to be down on power particularly going up hills, but not always (I solved the latter about 3,000 miles ago with a fuel filter change which I might do again...I do run a little veg but not for a while). Anyway the noise really is the same as yours - did yours only do it when you first started and did you confirm what it was in the end?

Your noise sounds like a slipping/worn alternator belt Dan - starting the engine takes a huge drain from the battery which the alternator replenishes in around the time you mention - a slipping belt will squeal until the load lessens. I once saw a bongo with the wrong type of belt fitted, the taper on the belt didn't match the taper on the pulley and the belt didn't last long.
