Unknown relay clicking after van started

Post by dangaran » Sun Feb 06, 2011 11:49 am

Hi, Never heard this noise before but as i was away for a week i thought i would start the bongo up
as its been sitting around for a week..
any way after the van had started i could immediately hear a relay switching on and off for about 8 to 10 seconds, everytime the relay came on it would make the other lights on the dash dim a little..

just tried this morning and the relay only clicked on and off for about 3 to 4 seconds,
only seems to do it when first started.

i do have a willington kit fitted (fine for 6 months) so i will have a look at that later but i thought i would first post on here to see if anyone else has had this strange relay issue??

only other thing that has changes is the van was at the garage the week beofre i went away,
this was to have diesel pump seals fitted.
Dave.

I agree with the above, it's likely that it's the glow plug relay clicking, the glow plugs pull a lot of current, hence the dimming lights.

It's likely that the garage had to give the engine loads of cranking to get it going after changing the pump seals, so chances are the battery is pretty low.

A good long run or trickle charge should hopefully sort it!

All seems ok after a week or so of driving, must have been low battery

Thanks
Dave.

Mine is doing the same thing.
has been for a while now and i have a willington kit fitted,
I i took the lead of today to see if it did it but it didnt as soon as i put the lead back on it started again.
The battery is new and its keeping the charge i think it might be the relay i will email willington see if he can send another.

I think there's been a batch of "iffy" relays - I've had two replaced by Willinton without quibble. I hope I haven't said anything in that statement that is libellous or likely to be censored 8)

Yep, I have just had my 'willinton' replaced because of a clicky relay, the jury's out on the replacement one, it still clicks on tickover, Martin wondered if its a poor earth on the mounting bracket...i'm waiting till Thursday as my new leisure battery keeps draining, and I reckon it's then Jap TV/satnav/stereo combo that's in...Im having it taken out and new audio fitted, so they can check the charging too (auto electricians). I have tried remaking the earth on the willinton bracket with lots of scraping and sanding on the cab side, I have remade the leisure battery earth too, but still persists....

A low charging alternator combined with a low leisure battery will make the relay click in and out.................I think the relay comes in at 13.5v.

I installed a Willington kit the other weekend. I still had the original fancy japanese radio/sat nav/tv in, and it drained the second battery overnight. When I started the engine the next day I had exactly those symptoms. For the first 5-10 seconds, then it settled down. I disconnected the stereo and the battery stayed charged and no clicking from the Willington relay. Problem is that the Bongo is not designed to have a radio live all the time, only when the ignition is on. So any radio doesn't have to worry about its drain on the battery as its on charge usually. The Willington kit bypasses the ignition switch for the radio and 12v sockets, so anything attached to that circuit needs to be a bit less power hungry, or able to be totally turned off when not in use.

It would be interesting to hear if this is a genuine issue with the Willington kit or just one of those things to expect when the battery is flat.

While i was at the meet today DBO and i did a test on the willington relay and its the relay thats clicking
the lights seam to flicker on and off when it clicks and the greenlight stays on for a while even when the bongo is off. after looking at a couple of other bongos with the kit on i thing mine could be faulty
quick email to willington and i know from other members he will sort it out.

Just fitted a new relay that willington sent me and it still clicks ,
i have noticed that my hands free kit is wired to the stereo live so i may fit a switch
that will keep the stereo and the hands free off while the van is off

funny thing is i had no clicking for 6 months, took it to a garage for work and now it clicks..

green light on my numax says that it is charged, maybe i need to buy a multimeter .
