Will Thule roof bars fit my Bongo

Post by HappyHooligan » Thu Nov 04, 2010 6:51 pm

Hello everyone,

I've just received my new ladder all the way from Japan and I'm now looking for some decent roof bars that will handle a roof box and surfboards (not necessarily at the same time). I've got a tin-top Bongo, year 2000 and I'm not really sure if I can just go out and get normal roof bars for it or do I need custom ones? I've seen people mention that they have Thule roof bars and messaged them but no replys yet.
Any help would be really great.
Thanks :)

ive got discovery ones on mine, but not sure of the make, already had them in the shed adjusted them cos a disco is wider, and there you go, but ive got an aft, ive allways found roofrack.co.uk very good and cheaper than most places, i think thats the site :? but its something like that. and they are good for unusual models. hope that helps.

Yes Thule ones fit if you get the higher than normal feet and longer than normal bars I can't remember which numbers apply.
The ones I have just clear the roof in the low bits either side of the sun roof and that keeps the height down for ferries etc.

But the next height up ones will clear the higher bits of the roof, Thule do about 3 or 4 different heights and about the same number of different bar lengths.

Hi,

I have the 960 foot pack, 2126 fitting kit and the 761 classic bars, which I got for about 60 quid off fleabay.

All fit and work fine.

[edit]Ignore all of the above you have a tin top.....I really should read the post first...

I haven't got a Bongo yet, but it may be imminent. Before I part with cash I need to be sure that I'll be able to carry 2 kayaks on the roof. The van has an Auto Free Top and I know from this site that I can get side bars and crossmembers to fit, but will it be up to carrying 2 16-foot kayaks weighing 25kg each? I see the rating is 65kg, but there's a lot of potential for sideloads here....Is the AFT made of steel or glassfibre? Is it strong enough to walk on to load the boats? Is it possible to fit a ladder to the rear door?

Sooo many questions...

Yes you can fit a ladder on the back. And a lot of members carry kayaks, see THIS LINK for more info that may help you.

You need
952
http://www.thule.com/en-GB/GB/Products/ ... 20952.aspx
or
953
http://www.thule.com/en-GB/GB/Products/ ... 20953.aspx

feet depending on how high above the roof you want the bars to be and then the 700 series bars -
http://www.thule.com/en-GB/GB/Products/ ... 20Bar.aspx
and go for the thicker 3mm bars you'll need almost the longest they make the shorter ones aren't long enough.
