Aerial lead connector?

Post by Richard Allen » Sat Aug 26, 2006 4:32 pm

MY CD radio has stopped receiving radio (after I had taken it out of the mounting to check the connections!). It works fine with a bit of wire plugged in the back as a temporary aerial so I checked the aerial lead for continuity and it's open circuit. I presume that there's a connector hidden away somewhere behind the dash or the A post or headlining or somewhere.

Does anyone know where to look before I make a mess of a pristine interior.

Thanks in advance and thanks for a great forum

On some, it's behind the side panel on the end of the dash. I don't know if it's the same on all.

It may well read open circuit resistance because there is often a capacitor in series.

Thanks gentlemen, the connector was exactly where you suggested and was intact and neatly taped to a support bracket. Having found it I was able to test in both directions and it is OK up to the aerial with the fault in the other direction.

I had forgotten that a capacitor might be in circuit so thanks for that but there is no capacitance showing from either end of the faulty section. I'll go back to the problem in daylight but as far as I can see with a torch it all looks undisturbed and there is plenty of spare cable wrapped in a loose foam sheath (to stop it rattling?) so I'm surprised that it's something I've done as I'm not usually that heavy handed. There is probably less than a foot I can't see/feel so I expect to find another connector somewhere or abandon it and pull in another extention lead.

I'll post the outcome tomorrow

Have a good evening

Found the fault and repaired the lead. When I went back to the problem this morning I couldn't see any damage and was able to see/feel the whole length so was about to pull in a new lead when I noticed something sharp underneath the foam sleeving a few inches back from the connector. There was just a slight nick in the sleeving but underneath the lead was sliced almost all the way through. The edge of the ISO cage is very sharp, yes I had to feel it and yes I did cut my finger. Anyway someone had trapped the lead and had forced the radio back against it probably causing the noise I was looking for in the first place.

Thanks again for the help.
