Tent Repairs

Post by Morticus » Thu Aug 24, 2006 5:54 pm

Does anyone have any experience or advice re repairs to the fluorescent tent fabric?

Freda has an "L" shaped 4" x 3" child-induced rip just above the sliding door.

My local tent repair people sent me to their local PVC man, and he gave me some PVC and said to try Evostick. Very friendly and helpful, but..............

Suggestions welcome. Advice re children not necessary.

Nobody?

Should I put this into the Sewing Bee section?

If you wanted advice regarding the children then there would have been a flood of replies!

There was some discussion on repairing the tent material some time ago but I think that it may have been about the netting rather than the PVC.

We've got a tiny tear in our outer tent too, doesn't go right through the material and I've left it alone till now rather than attempt a repair which might make it look worse. I was wondering about those magic repair crystals which you can use to make invisible mending on fabric but you do need some spare material and I don't know how the tent would stand up to being ironed. For a temporary repair to an "L" shaped tear how about using duck tape on the inside which is waterproof.

There is a good tent repairer in Mussellburgh -may well be the one you visited but you would have to remove the tent for repair.Be warned -his services can be bl---y expensive - but a patch should be OK .He may be able to do it without removing the tent from the frame.
You could speak to him about a DIY patch repair and he could probably come up with matching material and advise on the correct glue to use .
Better still, perhaps you could contact a Bongo breaker who might cut you a section from a knackered one, or flog you a s/h tent! If you do this then let me have a section of the material -handy to have!
If patching ,make the patch look as if it was meant to be there - like a strengthener - rectangle ,following a seam or similar - , rather than a simple round patch which would not blend in very well.

Thanks Vanvliet et al.

I did indeed go to the Musselburgh people. I have another tent needing a patch, so I'll be calling in again. I might phone ahead to make sure the boss is there.

If you ever need to remove the compartment, it's quite easy. The instructions are via this link: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 5c0abc7abd

Well, the professional advice from Gordon Grossart in Musselburgh was to hand stitch, and seal with Seamgrip by McNett. The result is strong, waterproof, interestingly handcrafted, but not beautiful unless you are into scars. I may get round to applying some suitable sticker over the stitching if I find something amusing.

Gordon seemed to think that PVC welding might be OK. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has gone down this route.
