Front Diff problems

Post by Terry0clare » Mon Aug 21, 2006 4:32 pm

Three days ago I replaced my series 3 landrover with a Bongo. The landrover always made whining noise from the transfer box so when, at higher speed, the Bongo did the same I tried to convince myself that this must, also, be normal. I was just at the point of deciding that this couldn?t be the case when oil came bursting out of the front drive shaft/diff oil seal. The dealer, who doesn?t undertake repairs, farmed it out to another garage. The mechanic there says he will replace the shaft and seal but do you think I should press for a full axle replacement.

Being ripped off occasionally is good for the soul.

Hi Terry
I think you should let him repair the seal and then retest for the noise. If it's still noisy then push for another transmission

The garage didn't fit a new differential but rebuilt the old one. Got it back today and on the way home it developed a horrible whining noise and the smell of more burning oil. Looks like he's going to have to put in a new one after all. Mean while another week goes by without me bongo.
