good read, thank you for the link. Another thing to add to me list of parts that need replacing....

I will have a new van in time, mark my words.

imo once the tyres wear in an unusual way they rarely go back to wearing straight.what i would do is put same size wheels/tyres on and replace the prop.change all the oils in the drivetrain.i think the fact that it broke the weekest link saved the rest of the tranny, all you can do really is try it.

I had the same tyre issue but removed front prop before anything broke.
My front tyres are back to normal but it's taken over a year.
( well, they've been fine for a while, hard to tell when they " went normal" ) .

There was a re-call notice on front prop support bearing ( bolts on by
under-tray ). Did you know about that?
Mine has yellow paint mark to show it's been " done ".
Could have been an original weak point causing too much movement?

I think I agree. I could run them till they settle, but i might shake something else off the van until then. I am thinking just replace all 4 tires, and then the shaft and see what happens.

I did not know there was a recall. I take it this was back in Japan, before they get sent over here? And if I do not have any yellow paint, do I start worrying? As stated in my previous email, I am just going to change the tires, and put a replacement shaft on, and see what's going on after that. Oh and get 4 wheel tracking done. I can remove the shaft if the fronts start to look like they are scrubbing, but to be honest, the feel since the shaft came of is that the van is so much "lighter" for want of a better word

tough one this, assuming it has not been tampered with, I think 128,000Km.

Or miles, I dunno, as it reads mph, but I think the odo is still km. But my MOT sez 128,000 miles...

I am not helping much am I?

I changed the fronts from 215 to 195 as I thought that is what it came out of the factory with, that is what I should use. But I only replaced the front tires.

So to replace the 4 tires, do I persist with 195 on the fronts, or revert to the 215 that were on it when I bought it? I was thinking of Eagle GT2 's al round, but now I am wondering whether to stay with the 195's....

Likely to be 128,000km, on mine the speed is in mph but the odometer still registering in km. Reason for asking is that ours has been chewing up front tyres for months now, certainly a viscous coupling issue, and getting worse. Not broken any drivetrain components yet but there's some odd vibes at certain speeds.

We've run 195/70 fronts and 215/65 rears since we got the van.

Ours is showing about 230,000km. :(

So, who has replacement VCs and how easy a job is it to fit etc

I rang bongo bits, and they advised £300 for a front Diff, and the VC was £300 or something, both off other bongos and tested. The shaft is £90 so I think new tires and shaft for me. I reckon you could get a transfer box off a broken Bongo and take your chances at how much life is left in it. But mine should not be breaking yet me thinks.

If you put 215's all round, then you can regularly swop the wheels front to back & get a more even tread wear before you have to replace all 4 tyres again, at the same time as its 4WD. Are the front tyre pressures about 40 psi? Mine were a bit lower & started scrubbing but since blowing them up it has eased.

my rears were 40 and fronts 38, but I have dropped the fronts to 30 now due to the scrubbing. I was wearing on the centre of the tire. I just think I bought the wrong front tires.

In your old condition would have been like driving with the brakes on a bit- tyres scrubbing.
Mine's now 2wd and steering feels lighter.

When I'm due new tyres will get same size all round. Not sure which size yet tho'.
Then I might go back to 4wd.

I run 40psi on the front and 36-40 rear depending on load.

I've done at least 20k miles on these tyres and the higher pressure is better on the front.
tyre garage originally put fronts at 28 psi  coz the door sticker says so.
I soon changed that.

I had the problem with uneven wear to the tyres causing castling, I changed to Kumho and had 215/65 15 fitted all round, after three years they have not worn significantly, i do 7000 miles a year.

So basically is it ok to run with the 'normal' sizes or generally best to go with all 4 the same size for rotating purposes?
