Cross Bay Walk + Steam Fair Weekend - July

Post by Harry » Sat Mar 20, 2010 5:25 pm

Fancy an unforgettable 'must do' lifetime experience walking across the sands of Morecambe Bay followed by a fun day at one of the largest Steam & Vintage vehicle shows in the country at Flookburgh?

Come and join the North West nutters on our exclusive campsite at Allithwaite, Cumbria over the weekend of 23rd - 25th July.

Camping on Allthwaite Playing field. No hookups as yet but generators allowed. Showers and toilets in the adjacent village hall. Well drained grass pitches on very slight slope. Capacity virtually unlimited. Site fee TBA (probably about £10 per van per night)...all proceeds to the village hall upkeep.

Shop 100m

Excellent pub with great food just a few hundred yards away recommended by bongonaughts.

Evening 'entertainment' in the North West Marquee.

All bongo forum members and their guests welcome.

Please follow the thread on the North West section.

cheers

Wow, i didn't know you were involved with that Harry. If you did it last year you may have seen Myself and DreamwarriorUK kite buggying at Bolton Le Sands.
We saw you, well i guess you were in amongst the hundreds of people streaming across the horizon.

I've done the walk a few times with the Queen's Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson who will also be leading the walk on the 24th July.

I always enjoy being out on the Bay, it's an amazing and awe inspiring place. I was also a member of Bay Search & Rescue for a couple of years and am still involved with them as Mountain Rescue liasison. Its an amazing feeling being out to sea on dry(ish) land, but a very dangerous envoirenment without expert knowledge.

I'll be doing the walk on the Saturday and the Steam Gathering on the Sunday.

cheers

The cross bay walk starts from Arnside at 5.00pm on Saturday evening and we'll land up at Kents Bank around 7.30 - 8.00pm.

Lets hope someone has got the barbie lit.

Hmmm, this could be a goer. As it starts at Arnside though, it's more likely that we'll partake of some fish & chips and then drive around to Allithwaite

I take it that we will need wellies to walk across the bay, or will walking boots be sufficiant?

Harry, i am asuming that this walk is done when the tide is at its lowest for the whole season. Am i right?.
If so then i bet me and Mike(dreamwarrioruk) will be flying kites on the beach at Bolton le Sands.
See you there.

Sorry we can't join you this year Harry. We had a fantastic time last year. Especially with the Munkey episode and the Sliding Scotsman (wonder how they are? He had Resticted, yes resticted to 50 emblazened on the rear of his Bongo).

If anyone is mulling over the idea of going, just go. It really is a very chilled and pleasant place to be. Fantastic company always.

Have fun, we will be thinking of you.

Best footwear for the cross bay walk are sandles which you don't mind getting soaked or don't mind the possibly losing i8n quicksand.

Wear shorts or trousers that you can roll past the knees.

Boots are generally a no no. You'll be wading a couple of times and if you get into quicksand you'll have a bad time getting out. Wellies are ok out on the sands but the water may be too deep for them.

given the way that the beach has changed over winter tony bls wont be much used this year, and if we go to the meet i might just take one kite to play tig with the kids or offer parachute jumps for cuddly toys like last year.
