Jobs done. Rad, hoses, and new stat. Double clipped the hoses, and due to getting rid of air con, I managed to replace stat from above. Tested both stats in a pan first and the new one opened quicker and further than the original stat, which was a genuine part.




New rad another cheapie, but this time without the pipe under the filler cap.
Well impressed with the delivery from Leeds.... delivered next day!!



Old rad (2 year old) has been splitting since a while.

Not surprising when many Highland roads are subject to rockfalls both large and small. About 10 years ago I lost the radiator of my Saab 900 to a rock kicked up by another car or lorry, found it sticking in the radiator after my temp gauge suddenly shot up.

I've got wire mesh behind the bumper and for the grill, this hopefully stops any stones. Does'nt stop stone chips on the bumper, scuttle, and bonnet though.

Wife's done a sixty mile round trip today and said the temperature did not rise above 88 degs. Use to run around 91-93 degs, and 103 degs when hammered.

No leaks so far.

That's interesting, as I was planning to use a silicon sealant on my hoses, as I have to replace the front heater matrix shortly...and I don't fancy phaffing around removing heater components regularly to play with the clips!.
What does this gas sealant seal like...does it remain flexible, and is it heat-resistant?

Did you use the mazda clips on silicon hoses? Or the standard Mazda rubber?

After more issues with weeping joints I managed to source some stainless T-bolt clamps locally, they aren't constant pressure, but they are wider (20mm as opposed to about 12mm with the jubilee clips) & more robust with a slightly rolled edge, works out to about £4.80 per clamp for the larger size 43-47mm, I've got 6 for now as the connection on to the rad hasn't had an issue (to do with the plastic pipe stubs?) & I got one smaller one 23-25mm (£2.65) to try for size, but I've had less issues with these as yet & don't want to chuck too much money at them if they don't do the job

Busy weekend ahead, new rad & waterpump to fit as well as the hose clips, I'll be taking the hoses off & cleaning the joints up, may even add a smear of silicone sealant unless anyone has reason why I shouldn't?

Hi Kirsty, the clamps look good, see how 'non round' the Jubilee type looks in comparison.

I don't see what harm the use of silicone sealant will do, it gives off a small amount of Acetic acid as it cures, but given the volume of the cooling system this wont be a problem.

Enjoy your fettling, just be careful of how much clamping pressure those bad boy clamps can apply!

The theory is, they'll need less clamping pressure anyway due to the increased surface area, hopefully this'll then allow the silicon hose to absorb the thermal expansion/contraction better as hopefully the silicon won't migrate sideways so much, add in a bit of belt & braces sealant to help bond the hose to the connections, job's a good un
