PINKING/KNOCKING 2 litre petrol

Post by dosmuletas » Tue Apr 20, 2010 7:52 pm

Hi
I have a 2 litre petrol 2001 Bongo and am getting knocking /pinking from the engine in top gear/under load/up hill etc. Can anyone advise.
I have had it suggested that the engine is set up for the higher octane fuel in Japan and the timing needs adjusting.
Thanks [-o<

There are a few things that could cause this, so before replacing parts, you could start with the simplest thing...

Have you tried it with super unleaded fuel? Because if you haven't, give it a try and see if it improves... if it does, then you can either continue with super unleaded or adjust it it as suggested... but be careful because you don't want to loose too much performance.

What do you think of some of these "wonder" fuel additives to remove carbon deposits such as BG44K. They seem to be highly recommended amongst some in the motoring press and one of the claims is that they will prevent pre-ignition.

Decent fuel will sort most of that out after a couple of tankfuls anyway. If you normally use supermarket fuel, switch to branded fuel and see if it makes any difference - it usually works out cheaper anyway 8) Failing that, try retarding the ignition slightly.

Most performance Jap cars (Scoobys Skylines NOT Bongos  ) for the domestic market are mapped for 100 ron fuel at the factory as they have had higher octain fuel long before we got Optimax and the like, so all performance grey imports had to be remapped to run on 95ron or add a booster. Your Bongo might have been remapped in Japan to run on 100 ron but i dont see why?

The performance stuff scoobies etc, will cut the boost back if they knock significantly and the ECU then learns those settings and so it doesnt do it again.

I would check timing first then possibly adjust it back slightly and try again, has it had new plugs and a fuel filter recently? could be issues there.

Also 2.0 ones are known for distributor issues.
