Took it to a garage.

Suddenly it starts fine for them
God I hate this van.

Presumably it is the temperature that is effecting the starting.
Thats the only thing that makes any sense.

Yes I did, and they said it started first time no problems.

The van is just trying to embaress me infront of the mechanics.
I've asked them to keep it a second night, but I can just tell its gonna start fine
until I've got it back again.

It is evil.

I've asked them to leave it out side all afternoon and all night.
Hopefully it should do it then.
But its only one degree colder tonight.

It'll be a real pain If I have to wait until winter to get it fixed.
but then again if it starts fine when its warm I guess thats tolerable.

Left it at the garage 2 nights and they said it started fine.

I had to collect it cos they couldn't find anything wrong.

I bet it goes back to not starting again tomorrow morning.

Park it at a garage for two nights and it starts fine.
then I bring it home and it wont start again.

OK, it can start, so while it is still fresh in your memory, try and think what is different between when it was at the garage and your house, any different angles, did they start it a different way, etc.

But failing that some Holy Water and a stiff birch twig might help!

I wasn't around when they started it at the garage. But they said it was totally instant, with no hessitation, and it never does that for me.

I was thinking temperature, but apparently I'm barking up the wrong tree with that one.

The only thing left seams to be subtle variations in slope, so i'm going to start parrking mine in differnent places to see whether that impacts.

Try parking it with its nose pointing down hill to see what way it starts as this should prevent any fuel running back if that is what the problem is.

Yeah thats the obvious step.
My drive looks fairly level fwd/back but it is tilted right/left.
So I've parked the bongo backwards to see if that has any impact.

Tomorrow I'll park it facing down, and sunday facing up.

I'll get to the bottom of this! Grrrr...

Yes, I parked the Bongo facing down hill and it started fine.
I'll try it again tomorrow, to check its not a fluke.

and then I'll park it facing up hill to make sure it wont start.

but it is looking likelack or compression, air getting in, diesel runing back...

What is the next step?

I'd just like to take it to a garage, but if they cant replicate the problem I'm not sure what they can do to fix it.

I figured it was time for an update.

Whether the van starts of not is totally random.

I would say rougly two thirds of the time it starts straignt away with a bit of a grumble and a spurt of white smoke as normal.
the other third of the time It pretends to start then dies. It then takes 20-30 seconds of continual turning over to eventually kick in. Though it always does.

I swapped over the fuel hose between the fuel filter and Diesel pump with clear hose to check for air bubbles and fuel run back. On the days when it refuses to start there isn't any noticeable run back. However when it does eventaully kick in a few small air bubbles do run back along the hose towards the fuel filter. (I'm not sure whether this has any relevance)

Once its working it will then start fine for the rest of the day althou on the odd occasion it will have problems again when I try and start it again at 17:00 when I want to come home from work.

In terms of a re cap.

Its had a new diesel pump front seal, 4 new glow plugs.

Voltage (11.14v) is getting to the glowplug bus bar, the glowplug relay is working and the fuseable link apears fine.

Anymore ideas? I've tried everthing everyone has ever suggested (I think) and mow I'm back to square one with a thud

I've only skimmed the whole thread so please excuse me if you have tried this, but mine had similar problems. Not sure of the technical name for this but the "small pipe to the fuel pump that tell it to chuck more fuel in" was missing. This was missing when I bought it.....man I thought it was underpowered.
Basically the turbo was screaming but the engine was not getting any extra fuel.

8 inches of air pipe fixed it. Drives like a new vehicle now (on the days when it's not leaking)

Edit...Doh, I see the turbo issues were solved a few pages back That'll teach me...skimming through threads quickly while I'm supposed to be working

Yes I think I should have started a new thread, but one problem kind came out of the other.

I'm pretty convinced that what ever they did to fix the last problem has has a knock on effect which is causing this one,
since I didn't have any starting problems before i sent away to be fixed.

Least it starts .....eventually.

but if its got electrical problems I'm worried something could burn out...
