Towbar mounted bike rack

Post by lars » Thu Sep 24, 2009 12:31 am

I need to carry 5 bikes, (2 adult and 3 kids). The Maxxraxx 5 bike towbar mounted carrier, (http://www.maxxraxx.co.uk) seems to fit the bill but they state that the vehicle "nose weight rating" needs to be 100kg. I have been unable to find this information. Does anyone out there know the Bongo figures, have any experience of this rack or have any alternative solutions?.

Can't comment in regards to the Bike rack but I believe they are well rated, as for Nose Weight.......... 85kg

We have had the 4 bike maxxraxx for a few years now and found it great for quickly putting on and off the car - use it both on the bongo and other car. The only thing we've found though if you have toddler bikes that haven't got a big gap in the middle for the bar to go through it's not that easy to fit them on. Ideally you need bikes that have got a straight crossbar with a big gap underneath to fit them on the rack properly.
Not sure about nosewights though.

Correct. Nose weight is 85kgs. Just make sure your tow bar plus bikes is less than 85 kgs.

Just to tidy up this thread, here is a photo of my Bongo with five bikes loaded onto the Maxxraxx carrier. Highly recommended.

Yes, they always go on that way, give or take, heaviest/largest bike closest to Bongo putting the weight vertically on the towbar, lightest/smallest furthest out. As it's a single beam they all sit more or less at their point of balance. Surprisingly I no longer get tailgated. I wonder why?
