each to his own.

Low Coolant Alarms are £70 delivered to forum members...Not as stated above.
Apologies for the misquoted price and good to hear you've managed to peg prices back at £70 for members.

Regrettably, I think I'm about to make myself very unpopular by suggesting that a mod. without an alarm is arguably worse than nothing.

I appreciate that some have simply undamped their gauges and (presumably) find it worthwhile. I've posted really to provide an alternative argument for those considering doing this without also fitting a temperature alarm of some sort.

In the light aviation incidents involving gliders and light aircraft, time and again the reports have confirmed it is the light aircraft pilots - busy scanning their instruments or dealing with radio traffic and not looking out of the window enough - that have failed to take the see and avoid action that prevented something serious. I think it's for that reason that I prefer audio alarms to instruments alone. :?

Hi,
My temp gauge without a mason goes to 11 and has gone higher than that when we were trying to bleed the system with a non genuine stat in it. With the mason it did the expected thing but usually settled at 12 unless in traffic etc.

The thermostat is stamped at 86 degrees C from memory.

My I-alert with sensor mounted at top of engine at main coolant exit before the thermostat sits are 61 on motorways, goes up to 70-72 in traffic. I suspect wind chill could be playing into this. May take a look round the back of the engine for an alternative install place.

BTW from a diagnostics computer via the ECU my car generally runs at 86 degrees when fully warm and working.

On a side note, as mine has an LPG system that in turn has an ECU with software to monitor and set up, if I had the spare cash it would also be possible to monitor quite a few things via this including the coolant temperature.

I hope you are not trying to blow a hole in the widely held theory that the standard gauge is 'as much use as a chocolate fireguard' Andy. that would never do [-X  8)

I must remind myself that I swore I would never join forum debates on minor issues as temperature gauges as I have a petrol V6 bongo not a diesel (reference: Ians stats from the Big Survey).

My gauge works. I watched it rise in Dieppe 18 months ago. I stopped and a quick coolant pipe bodge by euro assistance got us back on the way to Crete.

It wont cost you much to fit an alarm for yourself Haydn, so you might as well have one. End of story.

I am happy with 11 o'clock but its horses for courses.
