When to change tyres?

Post by paramatt » Sat Mar 06, 2010 9:11 pm

I've got a 4WD Bongo, and was wondering what members do reguarding swopping the wheels around from front to back?
My front tyres are starting to wear, obviously more so than the rears- should I move them onto the back and wear all four down, or replace the fronts when needed?

What have you done?

The recommendation is that you should replace all 4 tyres to maintain the circumference difference between limits. My rears wear substantially faster than the fronts & when I replaced them there was still so much tread on the front that I left the fronts on. If you have the same size all round, then yes you can rotate when part worn. Note that the best, ie newest, tyres should always be put on the rear - regardless of driving wheels.

Don't understand why the fronts are wearing faster unless the tracking is out :?

If you want to swap them, make sure you haven't got different sizes/ratings front & back.

It appears to be wearing on the outer edge- which would indicate tracking. I did have it checked and adjusted middle of last year- tho I may need to get it checked again next service!
All tyres are the same.
Thanks

What pressures are you running? if you're running at the Mazda recomended (34-36?) Chances are that's too low which'll wear the edge, a lot of us seem to be running at 38 -40, but check the tyre max pressure.

I checked them last week, about 34 all round, so I put them all up to 38.
