Sounds a bit more positive. About a 1cm overnight drop seems to be about normal, keep a good eye on your gauge & levels, have you got a low coolant alarm?
I'm suspicious of your stat & your rad from the behaviour you describe, personally I'd take out the stat & test it in a pan of water against the new one, I reckon it's been sticking & is possibly not doing its job properly. If it doesn't open up fully when it's supposed to, it won't force all the coolant through the rad (if it's not sludged up anyway) & then even if the fans are called on come on, it won't be cooling enough of the coolant to bring the temp down & it will be in danger of overheating. It seems silly to me to have a new stat & not fit it.
If the temp does start rising beyond what you're comfortable watching, stick both heaters on full heat & full blast to pull it down.
Some bedtime reading on the coolant system

I agree

Better done than not done once there is a suspicion the engine is running hot. It cna do nowt but good to fit the new stat. If there is no change, then either shrug or ponder whether radiator (or fan sensors, or temp sender maybe) are below par.
Kirsty - is he (more or less) safe to assume that if coolant pumps healthily out of the bleed tube that the water pump is doing its job properly?

If you rev the engine you should see the level change accordingly, (can't remember whether the funnel fills or empties) but to be honest if the waterpump wasn't working, you'd have no heat at the heaters & it would overheat in no time flat.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

water pump is working ok when i revved during the funnel see saw and the water level lowers in the funnel when revved.
Im happy with the result in a better and faster warm heater and knowing what temp she is actually at now with the undamped gauge. I will run it for the week then im gonna do the stat and waterpump i have a mate that has a radiator business so might see if he can do me one cheap of maybe test if the rad is sludged up in anyway.
thanks for all your help and advice i'll keep you posted how it all goes.

Sounds like a good plan

Good plan. Funds permitting, I find myself seeing a 'reconditioning' of the cooling system as a bl**dy good investment on a Bongo. I'm sure healthy coolant circulation is the key to a long engine life on a Bongo.

my thoughts exactly!
Checked this morning and the levels are spot on no drop overnight
Only travel 10 miles to work but heaters came on much sooner than before the flush and the temp guage sat at 1 o,clock position.
