Rust around rear heater pipes (cills)

Post by Gripped » Fri Feb 19, 2010 11:26 pm

Having looked on the forum, this seems to be a common issue. I found circles of rust around the pipes which go through the cill on the drivers side (rear heater).

I managed to wire brush the rust off, then use rust remover gel to get more off, then a bit of sanding before treating with anti rust primer. Then a generous layer of waxoyl underseal which is nasty black gloopy stuff, so hopefully will keep the rust at bay. PS, the brown "streaks" is where the underseal is thinner from brushing on, and not rust.

This is the area:

Well flagged up again, seen loads with problems in that area - mine included, needs a top up of waxoyl again too.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Yep, when I first saw the amount of localised rust, I thought it would be curtains for the cill, but luckily it was fairly shallow. That black waxoyl is great but will not come off your hands easily !

I need to get the rest of the underneath done, but not sure I can afford £500 for the posh treatment. Considering a combination of treating any rust patches myself, cleaning the underside, then getting a local garage to do a cheaper waxyol spray treatment. Then I can keep on top of it myself.

Also got some respraying to do..........

Where to check? or where to go to get get them checked?

Just in front of the drivers rear wheel under the cill where the heater pipes & condensate drain are.

Check it yourself, or any garage I guess. It may look ok, but check to see if the underseal on the seam feels a bit "crunchy".

Hi,

Well spotted.

Does the plate in question come off? I notice there is a securing nut, is it worth taking these off and dropping the plate down to check/treat the other side? I appreciate the plate can't be removed as it has pipes going through it but was wondering if it is likely to rust on the other side as well?

the nut holds the heater in place inside the bongo, it's not a plate - it's a well in the floor with all the heater & aircon gubbins in.
