Sliding Door Window keeps opening

Post by dave_aber » Thu Feb 18, 2010 10:51 am

Hi All,

Every now and then, about once or twice a week, I am finding that the window in the sliding door has opened on its own.

Sometimes I notice this when driving along, other times I have noticed it when I come out to the Bongo in the morning (can't say for sure it was shut the night before though).

So - what's causing this?

Don't carry people in the back often, so that rules out someone fiddling and leaving it open.
Can't see it being someone trying to break in - there are no marks outside to indicate this, and I've tried to break in myself without managing it.
Perhaps general vibration from driving along would cause it? The catch seems as tight as the other 2, and the seal semes to be well squeezed, keeping the pressure on the catch. The driver's side ones don't ever open on their own....

Anyone else suffered this?

Cheers
Dave

Our catches have a definite click at the end of the travel, so its obvious if it has closed, on occasions we have pulled the catch tight but not clicked them fully shut. I haven't looked closely enough to see if its an indent that makes the click or if its a case of the catch going over the TDC from the catch pivot, but if its an indent maybe yours have worn a bit ?

It could be one of the fixing screws on the front end is coming loose, as mine opened on it's own for a while - then one (the bottom one) of the front screws fell out.

Worth checking them for tightness.

Just been out and checked the 'click'.

No appreciable wear, and a positive click into place.

It may be passengers in the back fiddling, and not clicking closed, then they could vibrate open a while later I suppose...

I went and checked mine, and as described there are indents and ramps on the top and bottom to secure.

A few things worth checking.

1) There isn't any crud in the lower indents, stopping full pressure being applied.
2) Human factor, is it possible that someone thinks that it is the release for the sliding door, or kids playing around with it?
3) As the window is across from the drivers door, it will probably get the most air pressure as the drivers door is closed.

The catch appears to be made of nylon, which absorbs water and expands, this would reduce pressure on the mechanism, making it more likely to work loose.

After exhausting the above, it should be possible to apply gentle heat to the latch with a hairdryer, and using padded mole grips, gently squeeze the catch, and allow it to cool. This will then tighten things up.
