'Honest John' in the Telegraph stated recently that petrol engines in Japan run on 100RON petrol. As petrol in UK is usually 95RON what effects would this have on the 2l petrol Bongo engine? Does the timing need adjusting etc or anything else to allow for the lower rating?

Honest John talks a load of rubbish
- no reason to assume this is any better
100 RON is VERY rare throughout the world (even Shell V Power is only 98) and nobody has had any problems using the normal stuff over here.

Japan uses 89 and 96 RON ,Super Plus is 100 octane .......also Japan have been using unleaded since the 70's ......fully deployed since '87....... their Standard UL is 89.......Super is 96....... so our standard UL of 95 will be just fine....almost Super UL from where Bongo came from....

As you've said, 2 litre petrols seem to run fine on standard unleaded. Do you remember the 'star' ratings? I remember my Dad was so impressed by his GT Cortina, he used to put 5 star in it, but I don't think it made it go any faster.

You only need the "cheap" stuff......
Just awaiting a reply from Japan as to which is the Bongo owners favourite.... 89 or 96.... I would hazard a guess that as the same engine was used in the U.S models then the 89 would be the norm, although you don't have that choice in the UK.
