Coolant Question

Here is a picture of a sample of coolant removed from a Bongo.

The coolant was placed in a container ready for disposal when it was noticed that there is a definate separation in the fluid,

Here is picture with the light behind to hopefully give you a better idea of the density of the antifreeze. It looks on the pic as if it is really murky in the bottom, but it isn't. It's Pea Green.

The top pale colour made up 9 tenths and the bottom darker pea green, 1 tenth of the volume


Could anyone advise or post up if they have ever noticed this happen to coolant they have removed in the past.

The density was at -23 measured with a cheap Halfrauds Hydrometer in both levels. It had been stood around for a few days.

The coolant is of unknown age definatley over 3 years and Radflush was added the day before coolant was dropped.

Could this separation take place whilst in a Bongo that has been parked up for a few days?

Hmmn, possibly the flush has somehow reacted with the coolant??

Dont know how the flush chemicly reacts with the coolant, I presume it helps break it down somehow so it can be "flushed" from the system

I thought you had to drop the coolant then flush the system using water and the flushing solution???

Destructions said to put into system then run for 25 to 30 miles then drop.

Is that deffantly straight into the coolant?, and not drain then fill back up with flushing solution and water?

As you did put the flushing solution into the coolant and left it as you have done, you would expect to see some reaction as its designed to break it down in order for it to clean the sytem

So as it been stood its had chance to work, hencewhy I suppose you shouldnt leave it in longer than half an hr or whatever it says on the tin.

Can I be nosey....... :wink: yep usual for me........ Is that UK or Japanese coolant?..... or should I say...Has the coolant been changed on import?

I doing some research on coolants just now....all will be revealed in good time.........and just interested......

Ady says, he didn't drop the coolant 1st , he put into system, run for 25 to 30 miles then change coolant as he was going to break the system by changing the stat anyway.

I am struggling to find the product online as it is not the 2 stage type. Same blue bottle, but not with 1 and or 2 written on it.

Oh my head hurts. #-o

Mike - Unsure if the Coolant was changed on import as there is no record of it in the history. It did however have a cambelt change on import as a stickers at mileage and date are on the Bongo and history has been found for it. Do you have to drop coolant when this is done?

Coolant doesn't have to be dropped for the cambelt to be done, doesn't mean it wasn't though I guess, it may have just been part of a "routine" import service, so it wasn't mentioned. The cambelt is seen as being more critical & therefore noteworthy as a "selling point", as if that fails it's fairly catastrophic & instant, but probably not as expensive in damage terms as a head going to coolant issues, which will take a while to rear it's head & it'll always be difficult to prove exact cause & effect, eg incompatible coolant mixing, anticorrosion or antifreeze not doing it's job or sufficiently high in concentration, etc.

No that's fine, just wondered....my next thing will be to do a survey of what coolant Bongo folk have put in their systems since import/they owned their Bongo.....Not sure if to do it by Brand names/products or just type... :-k
