Bongo won't start

Post by gregomanchego » Thu Feb 04, 2010 12:05 pm

Hello all,
Help needed! My 95 diesel auto Freda won't start.
The battery is fine and when it does start it fires up straight away.
The problem is that sometimes I just get a click and nothing else. Usually when I wiggle the gear selector about or try it in neutral it starts. This made me think there was some kind of loose connection from the gear selector. Lately it's needed a lot of wiggling! And when it does start I'm not sure what I've done (if anything) to make it work!
It's an intermittent fault that's been getting worse, until today when it just won't start!
The symptoms are the same, battery fine, glowplug light illuminating and then going out but just a click.
Does anyone have any ideas? All help greatly received.

Cheers Greg

I would suggest it the starter motor contacts, intermittent starting like that is a common symptom, the gear lever wiggling is probably a red herring, had a few cases on here exactly the same. Easy job to do, starter motor out, contacts & plunger changed & back in in an hour. Factsheet in the members area - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... rmotor.pdf, there's a video on youtube somewhere & look on ebay for the contacts & plunger kit - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-BONGO-FORD- ... 439cb36a1f

Thanks for the speedy response. Sounds like you might have sussed the problem and the bonnet's not even been lifted (I know the engine's not under there)! I'll order the replacement kit and let you know how I get on.
I've perused the forum a fair bit but this is the first time I've needed help with a problem and I've got to say the collective knowledge reallly is amazing and so readily shared....makes you feel all warm inside

Common problem  , happened to me, nearly left me stranded in France at a fuel station a few hours before I was due to catch the ferry home, after a few weeks it'll just stop working at all
