THANKS

Yep did ask him about bleeding air when refittting pipe mechanic reckoned it wasn't necessary and just topped up with water. Heater working fine. Can anyone tell me how to adjust revs? Is it really not safe to drive until i can get another mechanic to look at it? really need van to drive to bristol next week but pretty long way from here in east sussex...Help!

If i were you, I'd down load the factsheet on bleed procedure, if you feel confident, try & bleed it, to make sure, or get it to a garage that actually knows what it's doing. Have you checked the coolant level, can't remember if you've got a low coolant alarm, but it sounds like it would be a good idea, to have one fitted. If you have an airlock or the leak hasn't been sorted properly, you could well be looking at another head, it's your choice. Personally I wouldn't have a lot of confidence in anything this guy has touched, has he done bongos before? is he on the recommended list in the members area?
This may help with the idle adjustment - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... %26+adjust. Sounds like he's increased the revs then you've reconnected the vacuum solenoid pipe whch has increased the revs further, what are the revs if it's disconnected?

Hi K & thanks for the link to the article re adjusting the idle...I will look at it in the morning.
In answer to your questions, the coolant level seems to be ok. I don't have a coolant alarm but it seems prudent to get one.

No the mechanic isn't on the list but I met another local Bongo owner who recommended him.
You're right to suggest that he increased the revs and then I've reconnected the vacuum solenoid pipe whch has increased the revs further up to 2000 when idle. The revs when the pipes disconnected are normal about 75-85 i'd say. I have taken disconnected the pipe for the time being!

I will try on Monday to see if I can bleed the system or otherwise get someone who knows what they're doing.

Sounds like he's upped the idle speed to compensate for rough running with pipe not connected to the solenoid. Get a REAL mechanic to look at unless your familiar with the diesel pump. He could have altered the pump to increase the revs( and your fuel consumption) or just on the throttle stop, either way it needs sorting. Get your cooling system checked or you could end up being the owner of another scrap Bongo head!
And should have read the whole thread :oops: then I wouldn't be repeating what's already been said DOH!

Took Bongo to work colleauge who has knowledge of motors and he looked at adjusting the idle for me and found that the solenoids had been switched. He swapped them back reconnected the tube which the mechanic had said was necessary to leave off in order for the revs to drop, and hey presto idle is back to normal. So reckon he was just playing on my ignorance and messing with vehicle to keep me in the dark as to what the real problem is.

I am proceeding with trying to get money back and go to another garage...wish me luck!

Thanks for the recommendations and help...Back to square one though as still not starting properly in morning. Had AA man take a look and he thinks might be injector problem or pump or worst scenario water getting into head somehow & thinks we need to take it to diesel specialist for diagnostics.
