engine suddenly stopped dead
i had a major operation end oct ,so my bongo has been standing for 3 months, in all that cold and snow .(very unfair)
went out to start it , flat battery ,as you would expect , (alarm system been on all the time) charged battery over night.
went out this morning and she started first go, yippee !!! ran as smooth as silk.
thought well i,ll run her until she,s properly warm (good job i was sitting in the drive) reving at about 1500 rpm , ran for 5-6 minutes
and engine stopped dead, no warning just dead stop.
tried several times to restart, all dial lights seem ok ,but just will not start
anyone any ideas pppppplease

This happened to me after I had a previous Bongo off the road for a few months. The fuel has evaporated causing contamination in the lines. You will need to flush and refill the fuel tank, replace the fuel filter, and cleanse or replace the fuel strainer ("banjo" filter).

thanks for the reply ian ,opps the tank is full to the brim . this could take some time to drain ,and what will i do with it

I take it that it's turning over ok, just not catching? If you suspect the fuel lines I'd try maybe cleaning the banjo filter & changing the fuel filter, fill it with injector cleaner & diesel mix before putting the new one back in, then use a bit of tube with some clean diesel in a container as the supply, if that runs ok then try using it from the fuel tank.
If none of that works, maybe check the fuel shut off solenoid? or check the airways & filter are clear, something may have taken up residence

thanks miss fixit , yes it turns over quite fast ,does an occasional burp as if its trying to start , but dosn,t break into full gallop.
can anyone show me where the fuel filter and banjo filters are ???? a picture would be really helpful !!!

Under the drivers seat, there's factsheets in the members area that should point you in the right direction.

Hi, this happened to me recently too, but I had run my tank very low. I couldn't get it going for love nor money but after a few pointers from a fellow member I got it going. First of all clean out the banjo and drain the main filter via the screw drain on the bottom. Then, if you have the manual fuel primer (I did) situated on top of the main fuel filter, manually prime it by loosening the bleed screw on the side and then push down several times until diesel comes out of it. Tighten the screw back up and then give it a few more pumps, it should become more difficult to pump. Mine started after a couple of coughs. If it sounds confusing, it should become apparent when you look at it.......hopefully....

ordered new filter from ian ,who says its on its way by fast pigeon.
meanwhile this morning i decided to put the battery charger on to top up , after i had used it so much yesterday.
then i thought well as you are going to charge it ,you may as well give it another try at starting,
i turned the key and just kept it on and on, at first it was turning over fast ,with the occasional burp, but still keeping the key on, the burps got more freguent, then it went into a stuttering run, and then all of a sudden it went into full gallop.
running really smooth
then i thought ,well it started yesterday,but only ran for 5-6 minutes then cut out, so i kept it running, at about 1500rpm with the occasional tick over , well after 30 mins it was still running ok, heat was up and normal ,so i took it for a run up the road for about a mile and back .
absolutely no problems.
so what i intend to do now is ,when the filter arrives fit that and clean out the banjo filter ,and leave it at that.
or as its running so well, go to the maxim ,"if it aint broke do,nt fix it."
what would you do ????????????????????????

Have to laugh when that happens. Put it on 'special measures' (local journeys only) until you have confidence in it again, and schedule an investigation for when the weather is better. It's a good idea to know how to change a fuel filter (you may want a strap wrench). Not done the banjo one myself but it doesn't sound too tricky (from the stories of others) as long as you are careful (use a cotton bud stick apparently) when fishing out the filter as its v. small and you don't want to drop it and lose it. Sounds like it took a while to self prime, bit of an airlock in the fuel line mebe? Personally I'd suck it & see. If the battery was getting low, it may have got low enough that there wasn't enough voltage to hold the fuel solenoid open? I don't think that was it, but bear it in mind, check the alternator is charging, should jump up from 12.something volts to 13.8 - 14.5volts ish. when you get it started.
Personally I'd see what happens, keep the fuel filter with you, if it runs ok I'd leave it for the mo, just to check it's not another problem, or a couple of problems, otherwise you could be creating other issues that confuse the matter even more.

Ok. time for me to be shot down, as the Bongo had been standing and it has been said an air leak could be the problem. This would cause the fuel to drain to the lowest point. So where is the leak?
If all the connections are air tight consider the front seal of the injector pump. (Behind the drive gear for the belt) this is the low pressure side of the pump that sucks fuel up and a bu**er to find out if it is a problem.

hi great pretender, can you be more specific where this pump is ,? if i can i need to check for leaks.
remember though i am yet to see a diesel that has,t got oil/ fuel leaks somewhere !!!
