dose anyone know how much atf oil you need for the gearbox and the same for the power steering as i wish to change both thanks jgk

AFT = 4 litres of type D... Dextron.

Are you a paid up member?

All this sort of info is in the members section. At a tenner for a years info, its a bargain.

Interesting thing checking my atf oil.

Vehicle supplied serviced by dealer. Check gearbox oil after 20 miles. Use the usual method, up and down the selector, leave in Park engine running.
Oil foaming and right up the dip stick to the bent bit. Way over the full mark.

Suck over a litre of oil out, drive 10 miles and check again-perfect, just on full. Drive another 10 miles home, another check, still over full and foaming!

Loathed to take any more oil out just in case.....

Really lost to understand all this- any techies know whats happening or what I'm doing wrong?
Incidentially, I got the oil out using a lamb reviver lit I found at farm store, great bit of kit.

don't know why it's doing it but if you're getting irregular readings then dip it with the engine running in "D" with the handbrake on hard. This will lower the idling speed and give less splash.
The oil shouldn't be foaming though...it's designed not to - hope someone hasn't put the wrong stuff in................ :?

Thanks Dandy.

Looking at it again I think the better description is "aerated". A couple of small bubbles on the dipstick better describes it.

Will try your method suggested.

I think that if overfilled only slightly lots of oil gets slung up the filler/ dipstick tube such that pulling out the dipstick drags extra oil onto the dipstick. How many times have you checked a dipstick and seen oil above the required level only to disappear later? Always takes a couple of goes to get a good reading.

The oil is the correct colour/smell and is at the correct level at 10 miles with the engine at normal working temp so I'm happy.
