Heater fan speed

Hi all,

I have recently had a problem with my heater fan dying on me. I stripped the motor, replaced the brushes, lubed up the thing and gave it a clean I then tried the fans and they didn't work... what was rather strange was that they suddenly started working later that day after I drove it for a while.

Since then they've been working fine. However; last night i had a different issue, some of the functions below were lost:

fan speed 1,2 and 3 don't work. but you CAN turn on the AC when these speeds are on (light goes on,but no air comes out)

fan speed 4 DOES work, but you CAN'T turn on the AC when on this setting (light doesn't go on, compressor doesn't kick in)

I already bought a resistor pack from ebay, but unfortunately it is a slightly different size to the original and it doesn't fit in place.

anyone know if this is a resistor pack problem? I don't know why it would limit the AC function!

It's clearly not a fuse, otherwise the functions would be lost entirely!

Remove your resistor pack and have a close look at it. A common problem is that the heater seizes up, the resistor pack overheats and then the solder joints melt and spring off. You should be able to see if this has happened to yours. If so it's just a case of re-soldering them - ignore the 'do not repair' warning...

The resistor pack is by-passed at the highest fan setting, that's why it still works at this speed.

Aha, that would make sense that it's bipassed.

True - can't help you there though. Have a look at the fact sheets in the member's section, there may be something there (can't remember off hand). I know there is a fact sheet giving chapter and verse on the heater/resistor pack problem.

This is the manual type of controls. not the electronic version with the display ?

With the manual aircon, I think I'm right in saying it doesn't come on unless if fan is in position zero? Certainly the rear fan doesn't come on when front is in position zero.

It all points to the resistor I think, as bongolow has said. Check that out and report back what happens then. Good luck

This is the manual control version.

The AC is supposed to only come on when in positions 1-3, not position 0.

First things first, i'll get the part out and check it at the weekend.
