Where to wire up my coolant alarm

Post by Gripped » Fri Jan 15, 2010 8:52 pm

Before I start hassling Hadyn (again), does anyone have advice on where to wire up the coolant alarm/temp alarm combos? It needs to be on a wire turned on by the ignition.... also where is best to connect the earth wire? Was going to use cable lock connectors too unless you advise otherwise?

Photos would be even better !!

Cheers :D

I took the power from the cig lighter.

took the leads off the cig lighter, pushed the wire into the connectors and put them back on.
As I remember the live is the one in the center. But I checked with a multimeter.
Bit difficult to get your hands in their but ok.

took of the cowel around the speedo, simple four screws. pushed out the blank switch above the cig lighter.
Also makes it much easier to see back of the cig lighter.

(tip if you look at the end of the switch cover their are four tabs to take the end off) Makes putting the red LED much easier. And I can see it quite clearly.

But it really is easier to ring Hydon. he really is a top chap.

David.

You may want to think whether or not you want to put a liesure battery in as if you do and want to patch things like lights, blinds and 12v sockets into it then they will be permanently live and no good for your coolant alarm.
I have fitted a few alarms myself and normally connect to one of the wires on the rear of the fusebox. Cant think exactly which one now (black with yellow stripe comes to mind :? ), but a quick check with a multimeter will tell you anyway.
Other than that - simples  .

I have a leisure battery already which is why I want to be careful about where I wire it up to, so would appreciate any help on the best place. The fuse box sounds good as I want to fit the alarm in the small cubby hole next to the drivers door. I don't have a multimeter either....

Don't do it.

These really are only any good if you really enjoy tracking down and fixing weird electrical faults - because that's all you'll end up with sooner or later.

Cut the wire you are tapping into, slip heatshrink over, solder the wire back together along with the new tap-off, and shrink the lot together.

What can I say - A HUGE thanks to Ed (Madmile) for his help fitting the coolant/temp alarm combo.

He is a true pro and I would highly recommend his Bongo conversions.
