Fuel pump seals in the snow

This is the ideal afternoon to do the fuel pump seals as its been snowing up here on and off for days.
SO fact sheet and tips from the brave ones who have tried this loaded on the pc and off we go.
Took off the steering fluid resovoir and air intake but also took small bore metal pipe out of its mountings,the onethat runs right where you need to get your hand down the back of the pump.
First bolt on the front no budge as usual. bit of alternating between spanner and socket as it seems to be hard to get a spanner on and get enough clearance to turn it, and away we go.
FRONT SECTION OFF.
Round at the back its SPANNER TIME (for all the rappers). Much feeling and swearing but plate came off with a bit of strange and sometimes sore finger manouvers.
NO SIGN OF SEAL. IT MUST STILL BE IN THE PUMP BUT MY FINGERS WERE NOW READY TO BREAK OFF WITH THE COLD SO ILL HAVE A FEEL TOMORROW. (sorry for shouting there but i've just this minute came in and frostbite is settin'in
My only question is...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET THE BACK PLATE BACK ON WITHOUT DISLOCATING FOUR FINGERS? . But i guess i'll find out tomorrow

My hand was to big to do it the way Dandy did. I removed the injector pipes from the back of the pump and worked from the left hand side as well. Hope that's helpful.

yeah G.P you're right it's much better to do it from the side aswell ooer missus. But luckily my wrists are like pipe cleaners. Well they wern't but they are now . So if anyone asks what you need for the job. List is
as follows. New seals,a small mirror, a torch, a spanner made from placticine so it can go places a spanner was never meant to go and lastly but certainly not least FINGERS AND ATLEAST ONE ARM LIKE SQUIDWARD TENTACLES. ( there is one other major item that many neglect to add to their list, A BOTTLE OF WHITE AND MACKAYS for lubricating purposes )
So it's done but tryin to start it was a no go cause it's been lyin' for 2 weeks under a little snow so i'm charging up the battery so i don't run it too flat.
But seriously this is awkward but it can be done. patience is needed AND SO IS WHITE AND MACKAYS .

I must stress (speaking personally) that it is a v. tricky job if your back - like mine - can't take bending over. I was off work for a week as the only I had to show for my (unsuccessful) efforts. It was a real false economy for me, trying to DIY it.

Hi All Got ma seals in charged the battery and tried to start . STILL NO GO.
Took out the fuel filter cleaned and primed with diesel but it still seems to be leaking from the front .
So i nicked up the bolts a little bit but its still leakin' from the front . I ASSUME THIS CAUSE WHEN YOU PRIME IT WITH FUEL, THEN TRY TO START IT IT JUST COMES OUT BELOW. Should i remove the front seal to check its seated properly and failing that order another seal and rub down the face plate of the piston abit more. and try again OR IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE CAUSIN' THE NON STARTIN' I just assume that there aint enough diesel gettin' to the injectors caue its all on the floor.
I thought that the new seals woud've made a bit of difference to the leak but still Pi..ing out.
