Goodo - you must forgive me if I appeared to cast aspertions. Not intended, its just I don't know him and so was preparing for worst case scenario! Good luck - you are lucky to have someone like that on handmister munkey wrote:mikeonb4c wrote: You could use a view from Dandywarhol, Simon Jones or someone else with 'street cred' (Allan maybe?) in case spannermonkey starts ranting about all these self-elected experts (me) who think they know about cars when they don't

Honestly - He's not like that. He's good at his craft & a Bongo Guru too - He covers the overspill work for Elams, has a good 5 years experience with the twin blowered beast
He's a man that takes pride in a job well done but at the same time is always keen to find the Right cure to a fault & is open to intelligent suggestions.
No-one knows everything about everything, he'd admit that & every little helps.
Further input also appreciated.

This is from Simon Jones post
Sorry to hear of your troubles. It does sound like a Ranger head has been fitted which does not have the bleed pipe outlet. Would definitely make bleeding in future very tricky. I had head gasket failure & I had the head tested & skimmed, but when I reassembled it water was still being blown out the expansion tank. After speaking to a well-known Bongo garage, they gave me two invaluable tips:
Deck the block. This is where you use very fine abrasive on a granite slab to remove any high spots from the top of the cast iron block. There is no point in fitting a perfectly flat new head to a block that is uneven.
Use Wellseal gasket sealant. Although sealant on gaskets is not generally the 'done thing' these days, it gives the best chance of a pressure-tight seal.
I've mentioned both these points on a few occasions, but its worth bearing them in mind as they really can make the difference between a quick fix & a long term solution.

Same here.

Mixing OAT (pink stuff) and conventional antifreeze can cause a reactionmister munkey wrote:50/50 of the pink stuff, changed about 3 weeks back.
similar to what you have described, causing the whole system to sludge
and produce an oily looking film in the expansion tank. It would take a
couple of weeks to fully develop.
Were you using conventional antifreeze before this coolant change ?.
Did you completely flush out all the old antifreeze ?.
Are you absolutely sure ?.
My apologies if you took the necessary precautions, but I have seen
similar symptoms as a result of mixing incompatible corrosion inhibitors.

No wurries Ben, it was a like for like flush & fill. I believe it only becomes a problem when mixing Jap coolant with the incompatible Euro stuff.
However, Bongo is now safely back home after the Head Surgery. Head pressure tested & skimmed, block didn't need to be flattend off - aparently - although we're still none the wiser as to why it blew in the first place - which is a bit of a worry, 'specially as we have a marathon 10 day tour of the outer hebrides planned as from next week.

Watch this space!!

Hi there
Will be watching this space because I love your input of your travels and "PHOTOS"
It is always a worry when there is no explanation as you are always thinking "Nothing concrete to say ahhh thank goodness that part has been replaced OR we can rest assured that it has been sorted properly".
After our many bad (and expensive) troubles in the past with new CYLINDER HEAD and then following Gasket letting go, I have come to the conclusion that "what will be will be" and turn the key and just chug off where I want to go and put our faith in the mechanic that finally seemed to have done his job well. Mind you we BEGGED for a SEALANT to be used before he reassembled our head....he refused point blank
All has been well though since.....now I am touching wood.
You are going ahead with your Marathon trip then Mr M?
Have a Happy Christmas at home before you set off on Boxing Day (hope that is the right day you entered earlier)

Keep a bit of space out front, we'll be popping by with your goodies from ebygum that I'm collecting in the next couple of days & depending on when we get to you we may need an overnight park up.
Regarding any potential mechanical disasters, I'm with Jimbo on this one.
Take it easy until such time as confdence has been resumed but at the first couple of days back on the road, the front heater seems pretty cool - not a good sign . . . . .

Cheers Woody - as you're paying attention at the mo could you book us in for Boxing day night please?
We'll be on our way to Mallaig for the ferry that day & yours seems an ideal spot for an overnighter.

Re: Surely, Not Another Overheating Post!
Hope all is well now Chris. We've covered just over under 10,000 miles since we had our head gasket problem, but I still get very nervous when going on long journeys. I now watch my temp gauge, TM2 & Haydn alarm like a hawk. These things seem to happen when least expected & for no apparent reason.
